Warning: SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett episode 4.

The Book of Boba Fett hints that Bib Fortuna betrayed the bounty hunter, and the moment may be a significant Return of the Jedi retcon. Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) returned to Star Wars through several appearances in Disney+'s The Mandalorian. In the series, Boba Fett recovers his armor from Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and even helps the Mandalorian save Baby Yoda/Grogu from peril. The series also sets up Boba Fett's journey in The Book of Boba Fett. In a Mandalorian post-credits scene, Boba Fett kills Bib Fortuna (Matthew Wood), who's been ruling in Jabba the Hutt's place. The bounty hunter then takes his place on Jabba the Hutt's former throne, looking to become the new crime lord on Tatooine.

Boba Fett's Star Wars return changes the character's past in the franchise. Boba Fett initially rose to fame due to a minor role in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back. The character then makes an embarrassing exit in 1983's Return of the Jedi, falling into a Sarlacc pit. However, The Mandalorian changes everything, showing Boba Fett lived after his Sarlacc ordeal. The Book of Boba Fett then details the former bounty hunter's Sarlacc escape and how the character befriended the Tusken Raiders and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) in the years after.

In Book of Boba Fett episode 4, the ex-bounty hunter mentions Bib Fortuna betraying him, and it may be a Return of the Jedi change. Boba Fett and Fennec Shand talk around a fire in a flashback scene during the episode, and the former bounty hunter shares his plans. According to Boba Fett, he's going to find his armor and "kill that bloated pig who double-crossed" him. Since Boba Fett kills Bib Fortuna in the Mandalorian post-credits scene, he's referring to the Twi'lek in the conversation. Still, the part about Bib Fortuna double-crossing him is raising eyebrows. The moment may hint at a significant Return of the Jedi change, showing Bib Fortuna was behind Boba Fett's fall into the Sarlacc.

Book of boba fett star wars theory explain boba fett combat problem bib fortuna

In the years after Boba Fett's embarrassing fall into the Sarlacc pit, fans speculated that there was a secret reason behind it. In Return of the Jedi, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) accidentally hits Boba Fett's jetpack, eventually sending him into the Sarlacc. To explain the bounty hunter's ineptness, theories claimed that Boba Fett was drunk or possibly drugged, and Bib Fortuna could've even been behind it. Unfortunately, the theories have little evidence other than Boba Fett's clumsiness. Still, Boba Fett's reveal that Bib Fortuna "double-crossed" him could finally prove there's more behind Boba Fett's Sarlacc fall than previously thought.

Of course, there are other possible reasons behind Boba Fett saying the line. For instance, Bib Fortuna essentially left Boba Fett for dead after the bounty hunter fell into the Sarlacc. Before Boba Fett kills the Twi'lek, Bib Fortuna even says he's heard rumors of Boba Fett surviving. If that's the case and the Twi'lek didn't look into the rumors, he clearly had no intention of ever helping the bounty hunter survive. Boba Fett could see that as a betrayal. Also, there's still a mystery of who massacred Boba Fett's Tusken Raider friends. If Bib Fortuna also had something to do with that, it would give new meaning to the scene where Boba Fett takes over on Jabba the Hutt's throne.
