Considering the way Boardwalk Empire season 2's bloody finale concluded, audiences are rightfully chomping at the bit to see just how far Nucky Thompson (Golden Globe-nominee Steve Buscemi) has fallen. After spending the majority of season 2 in some sort of danger, Nucky finally asserted himself as a force to be reckoned with in the bootlegging business, and must now deal with the consequences of those actions in season 3.
A new trailer for Boardwalk Empire season 3 has been released that teases the return of familiar faces, and helps introduce new ones. Every character that has made an impact on Nucky's life has a role to play this season - that is, if he hasn't already killed them.
Chief among the loose ends left in Thompson's life is the unresolved land dispute between him and Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald), to whom Nucky left many of his assets whilst fearing for his safety. As Margaret suggests in the trailer, the two will continue their charade of happiness and complacency, despite a major rift forming between them.
Season 3's new players will include, but not be limited to, Gyp Rosetti (played by Bobby Cannavale), an unnamed political figure played by James Cromwell (who is also joining the forthcoming season of American Horror Story), and Gaston Means (played by Stephen Root).
While Rosetti will most assuredly be causing problems for Nucky's criminal life, Cromwell appears to be equally as formidable a nuisance to his political career. Root, who plays a crook turned investigator, will bridge the gap, possibly in an effort to indict Nucky for his numerous criminal dealings.
Despite the loss of series' lynchpin Jimmy Darmody, it appears that his frequent cohorts – mother Gillian and confidant Richard Harrow – will have roles to play this season as well. Nucky even asks Harrow how many people he has killed, a tease suggesting Thompson's past sins will come back to haunt him.
Part of Boardwalk Empire's appeal has always rested with its writers' ability to balance so many intertwining narratives, yet give each one their due. Even Arnold Rothstein, shown briefly in the trailer, has something to say about Thompson's actions, and has always made us wonder whether he would be Nucky's undoing.
Where this season will take us is not entirely clear, but the prospect of a confrontation between Thompson and Gillian is enough to get us excited. How Thompson plans to circumvent or escape from his various predicaments - or if he will at all - is unclear, but we expect copious amounts of bullets, blood, booze, and dollars to be left in his wake.
Boardwalk Empire season 3 premieres September 16, 2012 @ 9pm on HBO.
