Truth or Dare - the latest horror effort from the immensely profitable Blumhouse Productions - gets a spring 2018 release date. Truth or Dare is the fourth Blumhouse horror film to be announced so far for 2018, and one wonders if it'll be the last. Specializing in crafting low budget fright flicks that scare up big profits at the box office, Blumhouse has turned properties like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge into hit franchises.
Blumhouse is coming off an incredibly successful 2017, thanks to three key horror films. January kicked things off with M. Night Shyamalan's Split, starring James McAvoy. Then, February saw Jordan Peele's directorial debut Get Out captivate moviegoers. Finally, October played host to Happy Death Day, a surprisingly smart and funny slasher comedy that surprised many critics and fans that went in expecting a cliched genre entry.

Together, Split, Get Out, and Happy Death Day hauled in over $600 million worldwide, all on budgets of less than $10 million. Truth or Dare hopes to assist Blumhouse in having as successful a 2018 as it had a 2017, and hits theaters on April 27, 2018, according to Deadline. Truth or Dare will be directed by Jeff Wadlow, writer and director of comic book-based sequel Kick-Ass 2. Wadlow also served as a producer on FX's The Strain, and A&E's Bates Motel. Starring in the film are Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars), and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf).
The plot of Truth or Dare is exactly what the title implies: a seemingly harmless game of truth or dare goes awry when a supernatural force begins punishing those who cheat at the game by telling a lie or refusing a dare. Based on that premise, Truth or Dare is clearly being targeted at the high school and/or college age crowd, but so was Happy Death Day, and that turned out well by most accounts.
The other three horror films previously announced for Blumhouse's 2018 schedule include Insidious: The Last Key - the fourth installment in the franchise - on January 5, The Purge: The Island - also a fourth installment - on July 4, and director David Gordon Green's new Halloween reboot on October 19. Only time will tell whether those films excel with audiences in the way that Split, Get Out, and Happy Death Day managed to.
