The sitcom Blossom aired its pilot episode on NBC in 1990 and gave viewers five memorable seasons from 1991 to 1995. The series centers on Blossom Russo, a young teen whose mother leaves the family before the show begins to pursue other dreams. Blossom is under her dad's care and lives with him and her older brothers, Tony and Joey.

The show holds a special place in many '90s kids' hearts, and the reboot rumors have swirled in the past. Does it need to be rebooted, though?

Shouldn't: Needs Classic Celebrities

Phylicia Rashad as Clair Huxtable in The Cosby Show Then and Now

One of the defining traits of Blossom is that the show's titular character gets imaginary advice from celebrities in lieu of her mother. The very first is the best--Phylicia Rashad, best known for The Cosby Show, in the episode following the pilot as Blossom's dream mother. Other names include David Spade, Will Smith, and Mr. T. Some of these people (or others like them) might be hard to nail down for an appearance on the reboot.

Should: Everyone Loves Mayim Bialik

Mayim Bialik Blossom Big Bang Theory

From Blossom to The Big Bang Theory and beyond, everybody loves Mayim Bialik. The actress brings an incredible energy to the screen, and fans know that she would not disappoint if given the opportunity to reprise the role of Blossom. Bialik would draw a wide audience and would give the reboot plenty of potential directions for a woman in her forties.

Although Bialik told USA Today that she is currently committed to another network, she also said, "I’m really excited to see other shows being rebooted. I feel like I would love to find a world where that would be possible for us."

Shouldn't: Don't Taint The Legacy

One of the biggest drawbacks to a Blossom reboot is the possibility that such a project could taint the show's legacy. Not all reboots are created equally, but Blossom has definite potential. There is still a chance that fans could react negatively, which could hurt their perpetual image of the original '90s show.

Should: Ultimate Nostalgia Fix

Blossom is a surefire recipe ingredient for the perfect pot of '90s nostalgia. The show captures the typical hairstyles, fashions, "very special episodes," and even dance moves of the day. Even though the nostalgia train has been running for awhile, some viewers will never tire of seeing their favorite childhood characters all over again.

Shouldn't: Reboots On The Decline?

As much as everyone wants to hear Joey Lawrence say, "Whoa," some television viewers complain that there is nothing new under the sun. Hollywood has clearly been taking advantage of the properties that they know are successful, but how long can they keep doing that? Some will forever be nostalgic, but others are ready for something new and don't want to see any more old shows revived.

Should: Portrays Different Family Structures

Blossom

One thing that many fans loved about Blossom was her unique family. The main character is going through her teen years without a mom, and the show is very real about that. During the time that the show originally aired, single parents were not the norm on television. Nick Russo is a musician who is an overprotective but loving dad. His kids aren't perfect, and one of them (Tony) is recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Nick also welcomes Blossom's best friend, Six, into the Russo home.

Shouldn't: Lacks TGIF Traction

Some of the '90s reboots thus far have stemmed from the success and fandom of ABC's TGIF shows. Full House and Boy Meets World were followed by Fuller House and Girl Meets World, and Netflix found an audience with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, its reincarnation of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

Other reboots of TGIF shows, like Family MattersStep by Step, and Sister, Sister, have also been considered. Since Blossom wasn't on ABC, it will lose the instant TGIF chatter.

Should: Peacock Potential

Blossom's NBC history actually sets it up perfectly for Peacock, NBC's new streaming platform. Peacock will be the home of the Saved by the Bell reboot, which is likely to boost subscribers when it finally surfaces. Blossom could certainly follow the Saved by the Bell model with the right branding and direction.

Shouldn't: Would The Concept Still Work?

Blossom in Blossom Blossoms

As fun as they are to revisit, the 1990s are not infallible. Sitcoms from the era have been criticized for a style of humor that is insensitive, politically incorrect, and dated. Like other sitcoms, not everything in Blossom is up to date. Also of significance is the brilliant premise of the series. Now that Blossom has blossomed, would a show about her still work?

Should: Refreshing Take On Life

jenna-von-oy-and-blossom

Fans are looking for reboots that translate well to a new space and time. Blossom would bring a refreshing perspective to life in a post-2020 world, especially if the bright-eyed teen is now a woman. Blossom was and still could be a big thinker with influential ideas. She has been through a lot, and with Bialik's signature smile and funky dance moves, the character would be just as relatable as ever.
