The Bloodshot trailer features a popular song about memories, but it’s not the original recorded version. Directed by David S.F. Wilson (the VFX supervisor for Avengers: Age of Ultron), Bloodshot is a big screen adaptation of the original Valiant comic series.
Set for release next year, Bloodshot stars Vin Diesel as Ray Garrison, a man who awakens to find out that he not only died, but has been transformed into an undead orchestrator of terror; a being designed to seemingly avenge his wife's death. But there’s a twist, of course, as Bloodshot discovers that his memories aren’t quite real. That’s where the Bloodshot trailer’s featured song increases the drama.
The song in the Bloodshot trailer is Johnny Cash's cover of "Memories Are Made Of This". The original was recorded in 1955 by Italian-American crooner Dean Martin, who was famously part of the Rat Pack crew with Frank Sinatra. The song’s nostalgia-themed lyrics reference the little things that romantic couples hold onto throughout the years: kisses, wedding bells, domestic memories. Sixty years after Martin recorded the Americana classic, his daughter Deana recorded her own version. In between, notable musicians offered their own spin, such as Sinatra, Little Richard, and the aforementioned Cash, who recorded “Memories Are Made of This” for his 1996 studio album American II: Unchained.
For the Bloodshot trailer, the selected cover version is symbolic. In contrast to dapper musicians like Martin, Sinatra and Little Richard, Cash was famous for his gruff demeanor, and for inspiring a new generation of “outlaw country” musicians. In that sense, his life approach and well-documented relationship issues mirror Bloodshot's journey. Cash’s life was chronicled in the 2005 biopic Walk the Line, in which Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon star as Cash and wife June Carter.
As for the music itself, the inherent lyrical nostalgia is used to reinforce Bloodshot’s primary conflict. Diesel’s character fondly remembers his late wife early on in the trailer, and “Memories Are Made of This” plays over the scene. Thirty seconds later, the track kicks in again when Ray is asked if he remembers everything. Cash’s version plays a third time when Bloodshot is prepped to kill a new target. This all sets up climactic moment when Ray aka Bloodshot finds out that his memories have been manipulated. In a final meta sequence during the Bloodshot trailer, Diesel’s character implies that an unnamed song, likely “Memories Are Made of This” within the movie itself, seems to be on repeat. Like the late Johnny Cash, Bloodshot is both inspired and traumatized by the past.
