Dave Wilson, the director of Bloodshot, will helm the sci-fi movie Influx for Sony Pictures. A longtime fan of science fiction, with a great affinity for novels in that genre, Wilson has spoken out in the past about how stories such as The Forever War and Snow Crash helped to influence Bloodshot. From the perspective of Wilson, the world depicted in the Valiant Comics adaptation wasn’t too far removed from the type of stories he enjoyed reading. Ultimately bigger in scale however, Bloodshot has been widely-regarded as the first installment of a wider franchise. Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the feature led by Vin Diesel has been one of the biggest titles to hit VOD services earlier than expected.

Now, according to THR, Wilson is set to collaborate with Sony Pictures for an adaptation of the 2014 sci-fi novel Influx by Daniel Suarez. Sony, which released Bloodshot in March, acquired the film rights to Influx earlier this year. The novel focuses on a physicist that finds himself behind bars, in a high-tech prison, just as he’s on the cusp of a significant breakthrough. Winning the Prometheus Award for Best Novel in the year of its release, Influx unfolds in a world where futuristic possibilities are a reality but only available to a select few. The physicist must band together with other prisoners in order to escape and fight back against this inequality.

Zak Olkewicz, a co-producer on Lights Out and the writer of the upcoming horror movie Fear Street, will adapt the story for the big screen. Todd Black, Steve Tisch, Jason Blumenthal and Tony Shaw will produce the project.

When the Influx movie does arrive, it’s likely to have a distinctive aesthetic style. Prior to helming Bloodshot, Wilson worked on the visual effects for Avengers: Age of Ultron and several high-profile video games including Halo Wars and BioShock Infinite. Carrying that experience forward, Influx may well play out like a video game where the physicist and his band of prisoners move on from one level of difficulty to the next.
