Modder Lance McDonald has released an unofficial 60 FPS patch for Bloodborne on PlayStation 4. McDonald developed the project last year, and promised to release the 60 FPS patch publicly if Sony and FromSoftware didn't update the RPG themselves. Despite the pleas of many a Bloodborne fan, however, no such official patch has gone live as of yet.

Since PlayStation 5's arrival late last year, numerous PS4 exclusives have received the next-gen update treatment. The likes of Days Gone and Ghost of Tsushima have both been patched to enable performance at a pretty smooth 60 frames per second. Earlier this month, God of War (2018) received a similar update enabling 60 FPS, checkerboard 4K resolution, as well as 2160p support. A vast number of notable PS4 exclusives remain underserved on this front, but a recent report suggests that at least The Last of Us Part II may soon get its own PS5 upgrade.

Appealing to the demand that Sony and FromSoftware refuse to fulfill, modder Lance McDonald has done as promised and released an unofficial 60 FPS patch for Bloodborne. A post on McDonald's Patreon page notes that the utility can be applied to Bloodborne's latest PS4 update, Version 1.09. Apparently, the utility should modify the game engine in such a way that increases the frame rate cap to 60. The patch will, in turn, lower the resolution to 1280x720. It's worth noting that such homebrew software will only run on modded PS4 and PS4 Pro systems. Since PlayStation 5 isn't moddable, there remains no surefire way to enjoy a heightened Bloodborne experience on Sony's more modern platform. McDonald's post further details the following:

"Please be sure to decrypt your eboot.bin and if needed, "un-sELF" it as well. The file when viewed in a hex editor should start with "ELF" and be exactly 93667641 bytes in size. You can download this utility from here: https://manfightdragon.com/60fpspatch.zip. I am not providing instructions for how to make backup copies of Bloodborne, or how to run a backup copy of your game on your console. These things are well documented online."

At the very least, some players will get to try their hand at a smoother version of Bloodborne. It's a shame that such an update hasn't been provided to the audience as a whole by the developer, though. And, interestingly, neither Sony nor FromSoftware have addressed the matter, leaving many fans to worry that an official 60 FPS patch may never see the light of day.

Presently, the crew at FromSoftware is busy with Elden Ring, which may finally receive new information in the next couple of months. The studio announced the title at E3 2019, but hasn't shared too many details since then. When Elden Ring is expected to hit store shelves serves as yet another FromSoftware mystery.
