Black Knight's sword, The Ebony Blade, will appear in the upcoming Blade film, confirms a Marvel VFX supervisor. While only a minor role in Eternals, Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) was being set up for a bigger role in the MCU as the post-credits scene of the movie featured him pulling out a sword, which comic book fans knew as The Ebony Blade. The scene shows Dane going towards it after Sersi (Gemma Chan) has been taken by Arshiem the Judge into space, but before Dane can touch it, a voice off-screen asks him if he is ready for that. The voice was confirmed by Eternals director, Chloé Zhao, to belong to Blade (Mashershala Ali), marking the character's first appearance in the MCU.

Ali was announced to play Blade in July 2019, and while no release date has been set for Blade, development on the movie has been moving along over the past couple of years. In February 2021, Watchmen and PEN15 writer, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, signed on to pen the script, and in September 2021, Mogul Mowgli director, Bassam Tariq, joined the project. Da 5 Bloods star, Delroy Lindo, joined the cast of Blade in November 2021 in an unknown role, and filming is likely expected to begin filming in summer 2022.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Eternals VFX supervisor, Stephane Ceretti, revealed that The Ebony Blade will appear in the Blade movie. No confirmation was given on if that means Harrington will reprise his role as Dane Whitman. Ceretti revealed some details about the inspiration for Ebony's blade visual look, a magnetic quality that is supposed to draw the user closer to it. Ceretti said:

"The funny thing is my second on the show, which is Martin Lawson my additional supervisor, is actually going to be supervising Blade very soon. So I told him, I said, 'I'm giving that to you as a gift, use it wisely and make good out of it.' But I'm sure it's going to do actually even better... I showed Chloe [Zhao] these ferromagnetic fluids and things like that. And it's like these little pieces of metal that you bring a magnet, and they start to all align in a way. Actually, that effect was my idea that we should have the feeling that as he's getting his finger close to it, the blade almost wants to suck him in. 'I'm talking to you, and you're going to be mine.'"

Mahershala Ali Blade Cottonmouth MCU

In the comics, The Ebony Blade is a legendary cursed item that has many mystical abilities including the ability to cut through almost any substance, can absorb energy, and heal its wielder. However, the blade has a blood curse and thrives on the negative tendencies of flawed and imperfect wielders to maximize its inherent power as a pure-of-heart person would dull the blade. The sword has a long history in the Marvel Universe, even tying back into Dracula, who could be the primary villain for the upcoming Blade movie, hinting at a connection between Blade and Black Knight.

The presence of The Ebony Blade in the upcoming Blade movie may suggest a detail about the film's plot and how it may connect to various swords in the Marvel Universe. Rumors circulated that the film would introduce the character Faiza Hussain, who goes by the name Excalibur in Marvel Comics, and the Excalibur sword was also featured in Eternals. The MCU also recently introduced the agency S.W.O.R.D, and while they are normally an extraterrestrial agency, they could find themselves as part of the Blade film. Marvel may have been setting this up in the pages of Marvel Comics, as the X-Men series recently published a crossover event called X of Swords, which featured a tournament where various powerful swords were used in combat. Given the character's name and his signature weapon is a sword, Blade could be a movie that highlights various different mystical weapons hidden across the MCU.
