There are not a lot of things that are scarier than Venom in the Marvel Universe, but artist Kyle Hotz just gave fans the most frightening symbiote yet. Variant cover art for Avengers #54 shows the vampire hunting Blade given a Carnage makeover. With his new symbiote appearance, the daywalker is more terrifying than ever.

Starting back in March, Marvel began turning some of its most iconic heroes into symbiote variants to commemorate Carnage’s 30th anniversary. In February, the publisher released Carnage Forever, a one-shot celebration of the blood-thirsty villain. Since then everyone from Black Panther to Captain America to She-Hulk has received the symbiote treatment, and each is more chilling than the last. Now, with the release of this new Blade cover art, Marvel may have created one of the most fearsome-looking symbiotes ever to grace a comic page.

Avengers #54 showcases the talented work of Jason Aaron, Juan Frigeri, David Curiel, Corey Petit, and Carlos Lao, but Hotz’s Carnage Forever variant cover is a real treat. Blade is transformed into his most monstrous form yet. At first, the demonic look makes it hard to tell who is being depicted, but it becomes more obvious with the creature’s visible fangs and the hero’s iconic sword clutched in its clawed hands. The daywalking vampire is already a determined and impressive hunter, but with this new form, vampires and villains will have nowhere to run.

Blade Carnage cover

The Carnage symbiote takes Blade's classic costume and imparts its traditional red skin, claws, and tendrils, while leaving him his vampire’s fangs surrounded by a dripping red mouth. The look of Blade’s traditional trench coat is mimicked by the purple and red clawed cowl that extends down from the neck. The coat element also gives this Blade variant a more amorphous look compared to some of the other previous symbiotes. It looks  as if this new symbiote could disappear into fog.

Though the variant cover is not an official in-story character, that does not detract from it being one of the scariest symbiotes Marvel ever created. The mist-like appearance suggests that it can strike from the shadows when least expected. Carnage has taken on a lot of new forms, but the skill, speed, and intensity of Blade combined with the ferocity and power of the symbiote would be enough to make any hero or villain start to fear the dark. Venom and Carnage are formidable in their own rights, but add to their abilities an insatiable desire for blood and anyone with a pulse should beware of this impressive and horrifying Blade variant cover from Marvel Comics.
