Liam Neeson uncovers a shady government conspiracy in the new trailer for Blacklight. The 69-year-old Neeson has threatened to retire from action films on more than one occasion, but he’s clearly not ready to hang up his guns just yet.
Indeed Neeson shows no signs of slowing down at all as he continues to appear in one action-packed B-movie after another. In his latest film Blacklight, the Taken star plays a freelance fixer with a long record of dangerous covert operations who uncovers a government plot that involves taking out ordinary citizens for shadowy reasons. Because this is a Neeson vehicle, his character’s family soon finds itself under threat from the very same people he used to work for, and he must now expose the truth while saving his loved ones from the bad guys, in the process proving that he's one of the good guys (even though he beats a lot of people up).
The first trailer for Neeson’s Blacklight has now made its way out (via Collider) and it’s safe to say the movie looks very familiar, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on what the actor’s fans are in the mood for. See the clip in the space below:
Neeson’s vehicles can of course be somewhat varied in tone, ranging from relatively modest Eastwoodian films like The Marksman all the way to the realm of ridiculous self-parody, as in the case of over-the-top movies like The Commuter and Cold Pursuit. Blacklight would seem to fall more on the straight action film side of things, as it sees Neeson playing a character very reminiscent of the one he portrayed in the Taken films, right down to the threatened family angle. But Neeson’s character isn’t alone in his fight this time around as he’s joined by a crusading journalist played by The Umbrella Academy’s Emmy Raver-Lampman. The cast also includes Tim Draxl, Taylor John Smith and Aidan Quinn.
It remains to be seen if Neeson’s latest action effort attracts any of the star’s die-hard fans to the multiplex when it hits theaters. But now is obviously not the best time for box office for any non-Marvel movie as COVID-related uncertainty is once again descending over the film business. Amid all that unease though, Neeson remains a reassuringly constant presence as he continues to defy the aging process and churn out action films at a rate that would be impressive for a man half his age. Blacklight releases exclusively in theaters on February 11, 2022.
