A new Black Widow trailer shows a young Natasha wielding a gun and protecting Yelena. Scarlett Johansson’s first appearance as Natasha Romanoff came in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Now, over a decade later, Black Widow marks Johansson’s first MCU solo outing and likely her final appearance as Natasha considering the fate she suffered on Vormir during Avengers: Endgame. After the third delay due to coronavirus, Black Widow’s chances of premiering in theaters were looking grim as fans clamored for Marvel to release the film on Disney+.

Now, the highly-anticipated kickoff to the MCU’s Phase 4 is under two weeks away as Black Widow debuts in theaters on July 9 with the option to stream on Disney+ Premier Access. A prequel set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the film follows Natasha as she evades prosecution for breaking the Sokovia Accords. She will also be forced to confront her past as she reunites with her Russian “family” and takes on the mysterious villain Taskmaster whose actual identity is still unknown.

Marvel Studios released a new trailer showcasing perhaps the most prominent member of Natasha’s spy family: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), a sister figure who was trained at the Red Room Academy with her. As evidenced by the trailer, Black Widow will flashback even further to this time in 1984 which will see Natasha playing the role of Yelena's older sister, as she must often protect her from danger. The trailer briefly shows their younger counterparts, played by Ever Anderson and Violet McGraw.

Considering Pugh’s involvement in the upcoming Disney+ series Hawkeye, many have speculated about Yelena’s future role in the MCU. With Natasha gone, this could very well indicate Yelena will assume her mantle in future MCU installments. This would be in line with Marvel’s previous passing of the torches, such as Steve Rogers unto Sam Wilson. A similar storyline is expected to play out in Hawkeye as Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) trains Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to be his successor.

Black Widow’s promotional campaign began in December of 2019 and it is now nearing its final leg. Therefore, not much more is left to be revealed ahead of the film's release. Another recent trailer provided perhaps the last look at Taskmaster before the film’s release. Hopefully, Black Widow provides a well-deserved sendoff for Natasha Romanoff that fans have been waiting for, while also setting up her mantle for future success.
