Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige addresses if David Harbour's Red Guardian actually fought Chris Evans' Captain America as he claims in Black Widow. Evans debuted the American super-soldier in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, the fifth installment in the MCU, and carried the role through two sequels, all four Avengers films and cameos in Thor: The Dark World and both Spider-Man films. Despite having seemingly retired from the role after Avengers: Endgame, rumors swirled earlier this year that talks began between Evans and Marvel Studios for him to return in the future.

Attempts to get a solo Black Widow film off the ground first began at Lionsgate in 2004 with David Hayter set to write and direct until the rights reverted back to Marvel and the heroine was introduced to the MCU in 2010's Iron Man 2. After plenty of campaigning from Scarlett Johansson and fans, Black Widow finally came to life in 2018 and attracted an all-star cast including Florence Pugh as sister-figure Yelena, Harbour as father-figure Alexei and Rachel Weisz as mother-figure Melina. Hitting theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 9 after a year of COVID-19-related delays, the film debuted to generally positive reviews and the largest box office opening since the pandemic began, though saw the largest-second-weekend box office drop of any MCU movie.

Feige utilized the Marvel Studios Twitter account to host a special watch part for their latest release, Black Widow. With one fan asking if Harbour's Red Guardian actually fought Evans' Captain America as he claims throughout the film, Feige offered a cheeky response referring to where the latter hero was at the time the former says he fought him. As much as a humorous notion it was for Harbour's Guardian to claim he had fought Cap at some point in the past, Feige's comments are pretty unsurprising. Additionally, one such character who faces Alexei in an arm-wrestling contest at the Russian prison in the film even addresses Cap having been on ice at the time he claimed to have fought him, resulting in the super-soldier breaking the inmate's arm out of frustration for attempting to humiliate him. Though it was interesting to see Harbour's character practically plead with Johansson's Natasha to assure she knows he's not lying about the fight, there was really no worse person he could've talked to about the fake fight given her close connection to Steve.

To a devoted MCU fan, the question of whether Red Guardian actually fought Captain America sometime before Black Widow may come as a poor one, but with much of the former's past still unknown, it's certainly understandable to want to get that clarification. Though Evans is likely done with the role, the door isn't entirely closed for Harbour's super-soldier to face off against an American counterpart as Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson now dons the Captain America moniker and Wyatt Russell's John Walker has the super-soldier serum flowing through him. Only time will tell what the future holds for the character.
