Merchandise for Black Widow teases new weapons for Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff. At long last, Natasha's solo movie is just around the corner. Fans have long called for the MCU's first female Avenger to get her own movie, but Marvel was slow to actually make it a reality. Even once the film was actually completed and ready for release, the Cate Shortland-directed Black Widow was delayed multiple times by the coronavirus pandemic; it will finally be released in theaters and via Disney+'s Premier Access on July 9. As a result, Marvel has once again started to promote Black Widow.
Set in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow will pick up with Natasha when she's on the run after violating the Sokovia Accords. Natasha is drawn back to her Russian roots and the Red Room that trained her as a child. This gives Black Widow the chance to introduce her spy family, comprised of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Alexei Shostakov, aka the Red Guardian (David Harbour). All the while, she must face a mysterious enemy known only as Taskmaster, a Red Room agent who can perfectly mimic others' fighting styles.
The various Black Widow trailers and posters have teased Natasha's new costumes, but a piece of merchandise actually hints at her latest weapons. Screen Rant's own Paul Young spotted a Black Widow tote bag on sale at Publix, and it shows an animated Natasha wielding two whip-like weapons. They're reminiscent of Nat's batons, though these look far more flexible. In fact, it could be that the batons have a new feature where they lose their rigid shape. Check it out below.
Natasha's Widow's Bite frequently gets the spotlight when it comes to her MCU appearances, but Black Widow provides the chance to expand her arsenal. Now that she is reunited with her fellow spies, she might find herself utilizing some weapons from her past. That might be the in-story reason for the change, though it could also just be that Black Widow wanted to switch things up. Either way, expect Natasha to have some new gadgets in the film.
All signs point to Black Widow being Natasha's last outing in the MCU's, so it needs to be a fitting end. Many fans were disappointed by her death in Avengers: Endgame, particularly since she didn't get much of a memorial after. Black Widow provides the chance to rectify that mistake by giving her the final adventure she deserves. By digging into Natasha's backstory and updating her costumes/weapons, this film is already promising to put her in the spotlight in a way that hasn't happened just yet. That alone makes Black Widow worth the wait.
