An exclusive look at one of the MCU's upcoming films, Black Widow, will air during the National College Football Championship on January 13th, 2020. As Marvel fans likely know, Black Widow has already come to be one of 2020's most anticipated films, and for good reason. With an excellent cast and a powerful female lead, somewhat of a rarity in superhero franchises, it isn't a movie to be missed. Black Widow will be the second Marvel movie to come out in early 2020, after The New Mutants.

Following the airport battle that went down among the Avengers in 2016, this new Black Widow film will start phase four of the MCU. It follows Soviet-born spy Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) as she confronts her past in the wake of the events that ensued in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. The film is written by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson and directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland. In addition to Johansson, the movie stars Rachel Weisz as Melina, Florence Pugh as Yelena, and David Harbour as Alexei, the Red Guardian.

As MCUCosmic reported, this inside look of Black Widow set to air during the NCAA championship will likely be a piece of extended footage from the film, as opposed to a trailer. Marvel trailers typically are released closer to the movie premiere date, and the site suggests it may even be the same footage shown during the Comic Con Experience a few weeks ago. This Black Widow spot will probably air during halftime of the football game, which will kick off at 8 p.m. EST.

Taskmaster Black Widow

Lionsgate acquired the rights for the film in 2004, so, in a way, Black Widow has been 16 years in the making. While the film was just greenlit in 2018, there has been buzz around a potential standalone Black Widow movie for years. Although Johansson joined the MCU in 2010 in Iron Man 2, Marvel has only recently caught on to the idea of creating standalone films with women at the forefront, beginning with the Brie Larson-fronted Captain Marvel. Judging by the success of movies like the latter, one can only hope Marvel will continue the trend of standalone movies featuring its female superheroes.

Director Cate Shortland, who previously wrote and directed the World War II-set drama Lore, will make her first foray into the superhero universe with Black Widow. Initially, the film was to be written by Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel), who completed the first draft, but Benson (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) was brought in to complete the screenplay. So, technically the film is co-written by Schaeffer, who wrote the box office smash Captain Marvel, and Benson, whose work on the Eleanor Rigby films apparently impressed Marvel executives. With two new movies coming in early 2020, the YA superhero film The New Mutants on April 3rd and the aforementioned Black Widow on May 1st, Marvel is set to enter Phase 4 with a bang.
