Marvel debuted new footage from Black Widow teasing Natasha Romanoff's unfinished business in the highly anticipated film. Taking place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the film will follow Scarlett Johansson's titular character as a conspiracy from her past catches up to her. Early trailers for Black Widow have teased that this has something to do with the Red Room, the place where Natasha trained to be a Black Widow. Natasha will also have to face off against Taskmaster, a villain connected to the Red Room.

Joining her in her mission is her chosen family. Rachel Weisz stars as Melina Vostokoff, another Black Widow and a mother figure to Natasha. David Harbour is Alexei Shostakov AKA the Red Guardian, the Russian Super Soldier counterpart to Captain America. Finally, Florence Pugh is Yelena Belova, a sister figure to Natasha and another Red Room trainee. The four will have to gang together and take on this latest threat, reckoning with their pasts in the process.

The latest footage from Black Widow, courtesy of a new trailer from Marvel for Phase 4 of the MCU, teases this confronting of the past, giving fans a glimpse into Natasha's family coming together. A few brief shots are shown of Natasha and Yelena on the run from a few Red Room assassins, while another shows the family getting ready for another mission. Taskmaster can also be seen getting ready to confront the Red Guardian before a montage of explosions and Natasha running prepares fans for the intense action to come.

When Black Widow hits theaters, it will have been two years since the last MCU feature was released, making Johansson's first solo outing a highly anticipated event. Still, how much it will factor into the future of the franchise remains unclear. The themes of many of the early Phase 4 projects, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the upcoming Hawkeye, seem to be about passing the baton down to the future generation of heroes. While Black Widow may take place in the past, it certainly seems primed to introduce a new character that can take on the mantle of the titular assassin.

That would be where Yelena Belova comes in. Pugh's character is set to appear in the aforementioned Hawkeye and is also rumored to be potentially pop up in other MCU projects. This dashes fears that releasing the film so late after Avengers: Endgame makes Black Widow lose its appeal, as it could play an integral role in introducing an MCU character that could be around for years to come. Luckily, fans won't have to wait long to find out, with Black Widow finally hitting screens this July.
