Mission: Impossible - Fallout cinematographer Rob Hardy has reportedly joined the crew for Marvel Studios' Black Widow. The solo movie for Scarlett Johansson is a long time coming and will be the second female-led solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film picked up significant momentum earlier this year when Jac Schaeffer was hired to write the script. After a long search, Marvel eventually named Cate Shortland to be the director, making her the first solo female director in the MCU. Black Widow has continued to come together since and is currently in the casting stage after character breakdowns made their way online. This is all leading the start of production for the movie, which could start filming next summer. With the movie firmly in the pre-production stage, the crew for the shoot is forming and just found its cinematographer.
DiscussingFilm reports Mission: Impossible - Fallout cinematographer Rob Hardy will serve the same role on Black Widow. In addition to shooting this year's Tom Cruise action movie, Hardy is also responsible for crafting the shots in Alex Garland's sci-fi films Annihilation and Ex Machina. This will be Hardy's first movie with Marvel Studios.
Hardy is the second known crew member for Black Widow, after it hired a production designer back in May. Now that his addition has been reported, it may not be too long before additional crew spots are hired. Marvel occasionally likes to use people they are familiar with in various departments, but that is so far not the case with Black Widow. As the rest of the crew is revealed, what other fresh talent they recruit could be worth keeping an eye on.
As for the recruiting of Hardy specifically, it is an exciting addition to Black Widow, especially after his work on Fallout. The plot and setting of Johansson's movie have yet to be revealed, but it is sure to feature plenty of action. After the experience Hardy gained with director Christopher McQuarrie on Fallout, he can hopefully help elevate the fight scenes even more. Since Black Widow is a spy that specializes in hand to hand combat and shootouts, there shouldn't be too much in terms of CGI when it comes to the action either, so Hardy's input and execution on filming the fights should actually have a chance to shine here. But, his ability goes well beyond the action, so there's reason to believe that Black Widow will, at the very least, be a great looking movie.
