A hidden Easter egg in the new trailer for Black Widow teases the secret identity of Rachel Weisz's character in Marvel Comics. This week, Marvel Studios dropped a final trailer for Black Widow, which shows David Harbour in action as the Red Guardian, and reveals more details about Taskmaster's role in the story. The trailer also dives a bit deeper into Black Widow's "family" and her life before the Avengers.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Marvel's Black Widow movie takes audiences back to a time where Scarlet Johansson's Natasha Romanoff was still a fugitive. Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the upcoming movie will introduce a supporting cast of characters with connections to Black Widow's past: Red Guardian, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and Melina (Rachel Weisz). Based on what's been seen in previous trailers, together the four characters make up a family, but their exact history and whether or not any of them are actually blood-related is currently unknown.

Halfway through the trailer, when Melina tells Black Widow "you won't win," a silver mask can be seen on the wall behind her. The mask resembles the one worn by her comic book counterpart, Iron Maiden. Since Iron Maiden's real name is Melina Vostokoff, it was theorized that the two may be one and the same, and in early February the connection was accidentally confirmed by Marvel. In the comic books, Iron Maiden is a lesser-known villain introduced in the early 1980s as a foe of Black Widow. She was a Russian agent whose skills were outclassed by Black Widow. Iron Maiden's jealousy led to a fight between the two.

Black Widow Iron Maiden mask

Iron Maiden has only appeared in a few comics in the years since. She's had brief, minor altercations with characters like Captain America, Iron Man, and the Thunderbolts, but hasn't been involved in any major storylines. Because of this, her reveal as a villain could come as a surprise even to audiences who are familiar with Marvel Comics. Black Widow could also subvert the comics portrayal by having Iron Maiden remain n the side of the good guys.

The Iron Maiden mask could just be a fun Easter egg, or it could be foreshadowing for a heel turn. Melina - a woman has been recognized as Black Widow's "mother" - may have operated as the Iron Maiden years ago while working for the Russian government. If so, the events of the film could force Melina to don the Iron Maiden mask again, just as David Harbour's Alexei Shostakov will be suiting up as Red Guardian. Alternatively, Melina reclaiming the mantle of Iron Maiden could mark the moment that she becomes an enemy instead of an ally.
