Black Widow might feature flashbacks of a young Natasha Romanoff. Black Widow is one of the founding members of the Avengers and was one of the first superheroes to be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scarlett Johansson has appeared in seven Marvel movies in her career, starting with Iron Man 2 in 2010. Black Widow sacrificed her life to obtain the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame, but the character is now getting a solo movie.

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting with solo movies before leading up to The Avengers in 2012, fans had been wondering when Black Widow would get her own film. With the character dying in Avengers: Endgame, it was announced that Black Widow would take place in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity WarBlack Widow stands as a prequel, but fans briefly saw a flashback from Natasha's past after Wanda Maximoff hypnotized her in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, it looks like Black Widow could go back even further.

In a Red Carpet Show at the Oscars, Variety got a chance to speak with Paul Gooch and David White, who were nominated for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Gooch briefly spoke about his work on Black Widow, explaining, "we're going back in time to when they were much younger. We have actors playing even younger than they are, the same characters".

Black Widow New Costume

Since the film is truly going back in time, the film opens the door to feature more MCU characters. The trailers show Thaddeus Ross returning once again, but some more prominent names could come back as well. It's been made known in the MCU that Black Widow and Hawkeye have a history. A clip from Black Widow shown as San Diego Comic-Con opened with a title card that says Budapest, meaning that Clint Barton could appear in the movie since we know he and Natasha worked the mission together. It was also reported back in September that Robert Downey Jr. might return as Iron Man, but that rumor has yet to be confirmed.

With Black Widow being the character's first solo movie, it makes sense that it will talk about her origin story. After all, it kind of has to explain how she met Red Guardian and the other characters on her team. If the film does feature an adolescent Natasha, fans will more than likely want a child actress to play the role over the use of CGI. Marvel's effect team de-aged Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War, which some would argue turned out strange. With the technological advancements since 2016, Marvel could do something similar in Black Widow, but it sounds like someone else will be playing the character in her flashback sequences.
