Captain America 4’s Anthony Mackie hilariously pays homage to Samuel L. Jackson by comparing his new look to that of the latter in Black Snake Moan. Since making his feature film debut in 2002’s 8 Mile, Mackie has cultivated an illustrious career, starring in everything from Million Dollar Baby and Half Nelson to Notorious and The Hurt Locker. In 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he gained global recognition for portraying Sam Wilson aka Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Mackie’s MCU character served primarily as a supporting playing until Steve Rogers passes him his shield in Avengers: Endgame. Phase 4’s second Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier explores Sam taking on the mantle of Captain America alongside Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who must reconcile his past as the Winter Soldier. Together, the pair work to stop the Flag-Smashers and the new “Cap.” Shortly after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier aired its finale, reports surfaced that Captain America 4 was in development, and, now, it’s since been confirmed that Mackie has signed a deal to star as its titular hero.

September 23 marked Anthony Mackie’s 43rd birthday and many fans took to social media honoring the actor. That being said, Mackie’s look in his subsequent post honored another MCU actor: Samuel L. Jackson has portrayed former director of SHIELD Nicholas J. Fury since the first MCU film, 2008’s Iron Man. Before Jackson even signed on, Marvel Comics was already using his likeness for the character. Echoing Mackie’s sentiment, the Oscar-nominated actor is one of the most prolific stars of all time with over 151 film credits. Looking at his filmography, Black Snake Moan usually isn’t ranked among his top ten best. Craig Brewer’s 2006 black comedy follows Jackson’s character, a troubled bluesman, who finds a hedonistic woman and holds her captive in an attempt to help her find a cure for her affliction.

While Mackie will return to the MCU in Captain America 4, Jackson has been voicing Fury in Disney+’s What If…? and is set to return in both director Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels and Disney+ series Secret InvasionSpider-Man: Far From Home’s dramatic credits scene showed Fury in space, and WandaVision’s mid-credits scene saw a Skrull recruit Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Fury and Rambeau’s inclusion in The Marvels will likely set up Disney+’s Secret Invasion series, possibly leading to a Skrull war.
