A post on Twitter showing an all-black version of the upcoming PlayStation 5 console has been debunked. The console's appearance was not shown until a reveal event streamed online last month, and it has earned mixed reactions due to its remarkable size and the strange, swooping curtain-like designs it's covered in. The PS5's predominantly white color scheme is also a marked departure from its predecessors, which have all been black ever since the PS2.

Sony has been reticent to share information about the console ever since it was first announced, and even now that the appearance has been revealed, there's still quite a bit that fans do not know about the PlayStation 5. Chief among these is the price of the console; numerous fake leaks have sprung up to indicate various figures, but Sony has yet to officially state an MSRP. It has confirmed that the PS5 will have special editions, likely coinciding with major game releases, but none of these have been shown either, so the extent to which these versions will change the console's appearance is still unknown.

Earlier today it almost looked like fans were getting a sneak peek at an alternate version of the PS5. Someone on Twitter leaked a supposed retailer sales incentive poster which seemed to display a slick, all-black PS5 with a matching controller. The color scheme is changed completely, and the decorative lights are changed from blue to red. Unfortunately, the leak was quickly debunked by fans (via ResetEra) online which pointed out that the image was clearly photoshopped; one of the red lights on the PS5 was still giving off a blue glow. One fan even accused the leaker of using the mockup that they had posted on Reddit almost a month ago.

It seems hard to believe at this point that there's any chance of the leak being real. But this doesn't mean that there will never be an all-black PS5. In addition to confirming special editions for the console, Matt MacLaurin, VP of UX design at PlayStation, revealed that the console will be customizable in ways that previous consoles weren't. It's unclear what this means for the appearance of the console, but it looks like players disappointed in the white-and-black color scheme will have other options.

New information is coming out about the PlayStation 5 all the time, and there's a lot left to learn before the system releases this holiday season. With several months before the console's release, it's still easy to get carried away by the promise of new information, even when that information comes from a less than reputable source. While the appearance of the console may not be quite as important as how it runs or the games that'll be running on it, developments like this fake Twitter leak prove that it's still something fans care deeply about. Hopefully it won't be long before we learn something real and concrete about the appearance of the PlayStation 5.
