A The Black Phone fan poster crosses over with another of Ethan Hawke's well known horror films, Sinister. Directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the new movie serves as an adaptation of novelist Joe Hill's 2004 short story of the same name. Set in the 1970s, it follows the abduction of a young boy who, after finding himself trapped inside a soundproofed basement with nothing but a disconnected phone, realizes the device allows him to communicate with his kidnapper's previous victims. The Black Phone was released on June 24, 2022, and for his portrayal of the serial murder known as the Grabber, Hawke has managed to terrify audiences and garner critical acclaim.
2012's Sinister, also directed by Derrickson, finds Hawke in a much different role, playing a father and struggling true-crime writer who inadvertently puts his entire family in danger when he uncovers a set of video tapes depicting gruesome murders, as well as the demonic figure Bughuul, in his home. The film received largely positive reactions and has developed a strong cult following in the years since its release, but some audiences are making a case that The Black Phone, while similar to it, is even scarier. Back in June, Hawke compared Sinister to The Black Phone by naming the new movie's script better and praising Derrickson's superior craftsmanship this time around.
Now, fan and artist Bosslogic shares a poster for The Black Phone that bears a striking resemblance to that of Sinister's, via Instagram. Like Sinister's poster, featuring a young girl and a blood-stained wall that reveals the face of Bughuul, this new image showcases the titular phone along with a similar blood pattern that forms the face of the Grabber. In its caption, the user notes that The Black Phone gave off Sinister "vibes." Check out the poster below:
Since The Black Phone's release, audiences have been drawing slight comparisons to Sinister, mainly when it comes to its dream sequences that appear similar to the tapes found in Ellison Oswalt's home. Some also theorize that The Black Phone and Sinister share a universe, due to both villains' actions and characteristics. Bughuul and the Grabber feed off of young children's fears and abduct their victims, and their physical features can be seen as more alike than different.
Whether the two films are related remains in question, but it certainly seems like The Black Phone is sparking memories of this other Derrickson and Hawke collaboration for many audience members. This fan poster reflects that feeling well, and it will be interesting to see if either creative touches on the similarities to Sinister.
