Black Panther's Wakanda Exists In Marvel's Spider-Man Game

Although Insomniac's Spider-Man PS4 game is focused on Peter Parker suiting up to save the day, the open-world epic also confirms the existence of Black Panther and his Wakanda homeland. Spider-Man includes nods to the likes of Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and the Avengers, but the potential of a Black Panther spinoff could be a clever move for the Marvel gaming universe.

Exceeding box office expectations, Ryan Coogler's Black Panther movie went on to break records in 2018 and finally give the fan-favorite character his own solo movie after his introduction in Captain America: Civil War. Although the fate of Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa is up in the air after the shocking events of Avengers: Infinity War, the vibranium-clad hero is sure to be a cornerstone of the MCU's Phase 4. And just as T'Challa opened Wakanda's borders at the end of Black Panther, it looks like Marvel Games is doing the same with Spider-Man.

While beating up supervillains is all well and good in Spider-Man, one of the side objectives is to use Parker's budding journalism skills to photograph various landmarks around the city. Eagle-eyed gamers can snap the likes of the Empire State Building or Brooklyn Bridge but may notice that the Wakandan Embassy stands out more than most. Even though T'Challa himself doesn't sneak in a Spider-Man cameo, the reference is enough to confirm that he is out there somewhere.

While the PlayStation-exclusive game spends its 20-hour story following a more mature Peter Parker facing off against a revamped Sinister Six, the sprawling backdrop of New York City teases a potential future of Marvel Games. Square Enix is currently working on its own Avengers title, but the temptation of a trip to Wakanda may be too much for Insomniac to pass up on further down the line. Alongside the likes of Shuri, M'Baku, Ulysses Klaue, and Killmonger, there is a whole host of Wakandan characters waiting in the wings of a potential Black Panther game.

Spider-Man visits plenty of familiar landmarks tied to Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, but a Black Panther game would offer a more interesting change of location. Although both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War visited Wakanda, the movies have barely scratched the surface of the advanced civilization. As it stands, the action-packed ending of Spider-Man puts the pieces in place for a potential villain for the inevitable sequel and an expanded role for Miles Morales. Insomniac is wise to continue its Spider-Man franchise for the time being, but as Marvel continues to cash in on the hype surrounding Web-Head, developers have left a trail of breadcrumbs teasing a much bigger franchise thanks to the appearance of the Wakandan Embassy.
