Warning: This post contains MAJOR spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s end-credits scene and new Marvel Cinematic Universe character explained. The MCU sequel is set years after 2018’s Black Panther, and following the events of Avengers: Endgame. A year after the death of King T’Challa, Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) must contend with Namor, an underwater ruler who poses a threat to Wakanda, her grief, and her place in the world after such tremendous loss.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has one post-credits scene, which comes at the mid-credits point, and reveals T’Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) had a son named Toussaint together. Shuri is surprised, but begins to cry tears of joy, while Nakia explains that her son is the true reason she did not attend King T’Challa’s funeral. Before he died, they agreed it wasn’t the right time to introduce Toussaint to the rest of Wakanda, though Queen Ramonda knew of Toussaint’s existence, and had met him. Does Toussaint exist in the comics? How old is he, and what does his introduction mean for his future in the MCU?

When Was Toussaint Born (& How Old Is He Now)?

T'Challa and Nakia look at each other in Black Panther

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reveals it’s been six years since Nakia left Wakanda, abandoning her life as a spy and moving to Haiti to settle there and teach children. This six years likely includes the five-year gap between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. With that in mind, Toussaint was likely born at the end of 2018 or early 2019. T’Challa was among those who were snapped by Thanos in 2018, and it’s possible Nakia left Wakanda shortly after his disappearance, already pregnant with Toussaint. What’s more, Wakanda Forever is set a year after T’Challa’s death, possibly in 2024, which suggests Toussaint is a little over five years old, six at the most.

Why Toussaint Didn’t Grow Up In Wakanda

Toussaint, whose real name is after his father T’Challa, didn’t grow up in Wakanda, and his existence is a secret kept from most everyone. With so much happening in Wakanda, and the pressure of the throne hanging over one’s head, T’Challa and Nakia decided to raise Toussaint in Haiti instead. There, Toussaint could experience a normal childhood, away from the Wakandan traditions that T’Challa and Shuri grew up with. While Toussaint obviously knows his father was a king, T’Challa’s illness was yet another reason why he didn’t want his son to visit Wakanda. Despite these reasons, it’s possible Nakia will finally take Toussaint to Wakanda when he’s a bit older.

Could Toussaint Become The Next Black Panther?

It’s not impossible, but Toussaint’s potential turn as Black Panther seems a long way away to fully take it seriously. He’s only five or six years old in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and it’s too soon to tell what his future holds. Toussaint would have to return to Wakanda at some point if he’s to truly inherit his father’s former mantle down the line. What’s more, with Shuri having officially become Black Panther, it’s doubtful she’d relinquish her new position so soon. Toussaint was likely introduced as a way to honor T’Challa — and by extension honor Chadwick Boseman — and his legacy. With Toussaint being so young, there’s no reason to rush his future.

Does Black Panther Have A Son In The Comics?

azari marvel

Black Panther has a son in the comics, but it isn’t Toussaint. Rather, T’Challa has a son, Azari, with Ororo Monroe/Storm, a prominent member of the X-Men, and not Nakia, as Wakanda Forever reveals. Another version of Azari, this one introduced in the animated film Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, Azari was born into a world where Ultron had eradicated most of the Avengers. Azari grew up under the tutelage of Tony Stark/Iron Man, and alongside the children of other Avengers. He went on to take up the mantle of Black Panther after his father, and inherited the powers of T’Challa and Storm, including super strength, flight, and electrokinesis.

The MCU’s Phase Four has introduced its fair share of younger characters — children and teenagers alike. Some of them have ties to the comics while others, like Thor: Love & Thunder’s Love, are new characters created for the MCU. Toussaint seems to be one of them, as he’s not necessarily based on any comic book character. While he could become the next Black Panther, it’s possible there is more to his MCU future than inheriting his father and aunt’s mantle and legacy after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With the MCU introducing the children of superheroes like Thor and Black Panther, they could go on to form their own superhero team (like Young Avengers) in the future.
