Black Panther: Wakanda Forever breaks a Disney+ viewership record as it has the biggest debut for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Ryan Coogler's highly anticipated Black Panther sequel released in theaters in November 2022 to great acclaim. The movie closed out MCU Phase 4 by having Shuri (Letitia Wright) step into the Black Panther mantle and lead Wakanda in a fight against Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and Talokan. After a very successful box office run that saw the film make over $800 million worldwide, Black Panther 2 was released on Disney+ in February 2023 ahead of its home media physical release.

Five days after the film debuted, Disney has now confirmed that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had the biggest debut for any MCU movie after it became available on Disney+.

Black Panther 2's Disney+ viewership record is based on how many hours it was watched within the first five days of release on the streaming service. Disney did not provide a specific number for the hours viewed. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's viewership on Disney+ is known to top all other Phase 4 MCU movies, including fellow 2022 releases Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Every Record Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Broke

The Disney+ viewership record that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever now owns is the latest type of record that the movie has broken. The film is now a certified success for Disney's streaming service after an impressive box office run. This included Black Panther: Wakanda Forever setting a new box office record for the best opening weekend domestically in November after its $181 million first three days. The movie continued its dominance and broke an MCU record after being the top film at the box office for five straight weekends.

Black Panther 2 also broke an Oscars record for the MCU. While the first Black Panther was responsible for Marvel Studios finally winning its first Academy Awards in 2019 and getting the first Best Picture nomination, the acting categories have long ignored the MCU movies. This changed with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever thanks to Angela Bassett's powerful performance as Queen Ramonda. She earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination thanks to her work. Bassett is even the favorite to win the award, which would be another way for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to break records.

The various records Black Panther 2 broke make it quite clear why Marvel Studios is looking to expand the franchise. Ryan Coogler is confirmed to be working on different spinoffs, while there has also been some talk of Black Panther 3 being in development already. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever breaking Disney+ viewership records for the MCU will only further strengthen Marvel Studios' faith in the franchise and ensure it continues in various forms.
