There's a new Black Panther trailer coming tomorrow - Monday January 8, 2017 - but when will it actually be released? The first mega movie of 2018 is the solo debut of T'Challa, King of Wakanda, better known to MCU fans as Black Panther. Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Chadwick Boseman, it's the first person-of-color led entry in the MCU, and first for the superhero genre since Blade: Trinity in 2004.
We've already got two incredible teases so far: a teaser trailer that highlighted the hidden land of Wakanda, an immensely-advanced nation that exists secluded in Africa; and a full trailer that showed off some more of the villainy at play (care of Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger) and the vibrant action. A third proper trailer was announced last weekend, and it'll finally air tomorrow.
The trailer is confirmed to air during the College Football Playoff National Championship airing on ESPN. It hasn't been stated when exactly the footage will air - some have assumed 8pm EST from the announcement promo, but that's actually the game's start-time - but based on the traditional release patterns in Monday Night Football for Marvel and other Disney properties like Star Wars, it's likely to be at some point in half-time. This will presumably be around 10pm EST/7pm PST, so expect it to air any time after then. Of course, you don't have to watch the game to see the trailer - it'll be available immediately on Marvel's YouTube channel.
Releasing trailers during football games is becoming increasingly popular for studios. It provides an opportunity to promote to a wider audience that would perhaps be unaware of upcoming cinema releases. For Disney it's especially potent as they own ESPN, the network on which College Football is playing, so it serves as some strong brand synergy.
As for what we'll see in the trailer, hopefully we'll get a greater sense of the plot. Like most Marvel movies, so far Panther has sold itself very much on the promise of the brand, as well as the specific character and the tone he brings with him, but they should now give a taste of what threatens T'Challa's family and his homeland. Along with that, there's hunger for some Killmonger; Jordan's performance has been one of the most hyped by the cast and crew, so a taste of what's to come would be welcome. There'll also ideally be some refined CGI from some rather rubbery shots in the previous teases.
