Now is a great time to be a Marvel fan with development studios from all corners of the globe pitching in on bringing beloved comic book characters like Black Panther into the world of gaming. Many are already awaiting Insomniac's upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel's Wolverine. However, despite these pending releases, there appears to be another Marvel game in the works, one that may see players taking the role of Wakanda's fearless warrior.

The demand for superhero games is at an all-time high with Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy getting praised by players and critics alike. DC has also set its sights on continued video game success with the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Gotham Knights. Now the most recent rumors have claimed that an open-world Black Panther game is in the works, and it seems Electronic Arts is behind it.

Electronic Arts has had recent troubles after fans were disappointed with Battlefield 2042, which many consider the series' worst entry. Despite that rocky launch, EA appears to be expanding its reach by diving into lucrative IPs such as Star Wars, DC, and now Marvel. This upcoming Black Panther game has been referred to as "Project Rainer," and will be developed under former Monolith Productions VP Kevin Stephens, according to Twitter user and industry insider Nibel.

EA's Black Panther Game May Show A Younger King T'Challa

EA's rumored Black Panther game could show a younger T'Challa.

Not much is known about the rumored game, but the little information provided states that this new title will be an entirely original story outside of the MCU and Marvel's Avengers. Project Rainer, presumably a code name, will see players become Wakanda's next hero, taking over the role of Black Panther. While many believe this game will follow a similar plot to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where T'Challa's successor takes on the Black Panther mantle, it is also likely that this game could instead explore the origins of T'Challa.

Electronic Arts' new Marvel game might just be a faithful adaptation of the comics and tell the story of T'Challa becoming the vibranium-suited superhero following the death of his father, T'Chaka. This in-development Black Panther title could see players attempting to protect the source of vibranium that made Wakanda a technologically advanced nation. As an open-world game, it seems likely to feature exploration in Wakanda, but other locales on the African continent would be an exciting change of pace from, say, Marvel's Spider-Man 2's open world map in New York City. It's also possible that familiar antagonists such as Killmonger make an appearance, but fans will most likely have to wait until an official announcement to hear any details. In the meantime, Marvel enthusiasts can look forward to Insomniac's upcoming games while they wait on more info from EA and its Black Panther project.
