The bona fides continue to pour in for Black Panther, as the soundtrack for Marvel’s latest movie looks to top Billboard charts with its sales. Black Panther is poised to start Marvel Studios’ year on the big screen with a bang, from both a critical and commercial perspective. Black Panther keeps breaking records when it comes to ticket pre-sales too and seems all but assured to set a box office opening record for February this weekend.
In addition to the buzz around Black Panther the film, the Kendrick Lamar-produced soundtrack for the movie has become a hit unto itself. The music video for Black Panther‘s first single offered a taste of what the soundtrack will offer, with tracks featuring SZA, James Blake, 2 Chainz, and more. Much like the actual movie, the Black Panther album is on its way to setting its own sales records.
EW is reporting that the combined might of Lamar and Black Panther has the film destined to hit number one on the Billboard Top 100, when the music week ends tomorrow. Released last week, the soundtrack has been endorsed across social media by a number of celebrities, and the connection to Black Panther has only increased the visibility that would normally accompany a new album release by Lamar.
Black Panther: The Album looks on track to sell 100,000 units by the end of the week, no small feat in an era where music consumption is down. Earning the top spot will make it only the second soundtrack of the year to accomplish such a feat, with The Greatest Showman naturally claiming the previous spot. Still, given how rarely non-musical movie soundtracks make such an impact on the zeitgeist, it’s certainly another feather in the cap of Black Panther that even its music is record-breaking.
There are plenty of reasons why it took so long for Black Panther to be made, but it seems clear that now was the perfect time for the film to arrive. Its content has never felt more relevant and Marvel Studios is in a position to properly bring T’Challa and Wakanda to life in cinematic form. The added touch of involving one of the world’s most popular musical artists was yet another inspired choice from the minds behind the film, ensuring Black Panther will be a cultural juggernaut for years to come.
