Marvel casting director Sarah Halley Finn reveals her team knew "immediately" Chadwick Boseman should be their Black Panther. Boseman made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War. After becoming a fan favorite, he went on to star in a solo film, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Featuring a predominantly Black cast, Black Panther was a huge step forward for Marvel in terms of representation, with Boseman leading the charge. The movie was also a critical and commercial success, becoming the first superhero movie to receive a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. It's widely considered to be one of the MCU's best films.

Sadly, this weekend came the shocking news Boseman had passed away from colon cancer. Despite being diagnosed in 2016, the actor continued acting throughout the last four years, including in the MCU. Following his passing, colleagues and fans began to share tributes online, including Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Boseman's Marvel co-stars also paid their respects, with Captain America star Chris Evans calling Boseman "a true original." Angela Bassett, who played Boseman's onscreen mother, was also among those who shared a heartfelt message, calling him "family."

Now, another Marvel figure has honored the actor. In a remembrance shared with Vulture, Finn spoke about casting Boseman in the iconic role of Black Panther, while also lauding his impressive work ethic. She said in part:

In different projects at Marvel, we’ve had very extensive searches where we’ll see literally thousands of people for a role. But when it came to casting Black Panther, it was unanimous. We all were in absolute agreement immediately that he was the person to play this part. My team at Marvel had seen his body of work and knew his ability to channel this kind of dignity, this grace, this elegance, this regalness with humility and humor and intelligence.

Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther

Considering Boseman's astounding performance as Black Panther, it's no wonder Marvel knew right away he was the person for the job. He captivated moviegoers with his nuanced take on the character, imbuing him with warmth, honor, and humor. Finn's mention of Boseman's ability to portray "regalness" is also worth noting, as it was an essential part of T'Challa, King of Wakanda. Though Boseman's body of work is vast, it's his time as Black Panther that will likely be remembered the most.

It's clear from the reaction to Boseman's death he was a beloved figure in Hollywood, especially for those who worked with him. However, he was perhaps equally important to his fans, many of whom finally saw themselves represented in Black Panther. Boseman leaves behind an untarnished legacy that will hopefully bring all who loved him comfort. MCU fans can take heart knowing Marvel never once doubted Boseman was the perfect person to be their Black Panther.
