A new image from the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hints at the introduction of Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart. Last year it was announced that Judas and the Black Messiah star Dominique Thorne would play the lead in Disney+’s Ironheart, a series following Riri Williams, an MIT student who builds her own Iron Man suit. The show will consist of 6 episodes written by Chinaka Hodge. Yesterday, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed that Thorne will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the Black Panther sequel before shooting her series.

Production for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is well underway and, while plot details are being kept under wraps, recent reports online point to it featuring a war between the underwater city of Atlantis and Wakanda. Like its predecessor, the sequel will be directed by Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole. The film’s original plot was scrapped following the tragic passing of Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman, and Marvel’s appropriate decision not to recast the role. In addition to Thorne’s debut, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will see Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Martin Freeman reprise their roles and is set to be released on July 8, 2022 as part of MCU's Phase 4.

The image, taken in Worchester Massachusetts, features a pair of armored vehicles and a police car reading “Cambridge” being transported to set. Cambridge, Massachusetts is, of course, the location of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the school that Riri Williams attends. Check it out below:

As previously mentioned, Thorne will film scenes for the upcoming sequel before production begins on her series—which is set to begin shortly. While Feige said Riri will appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, he said nothing of Ironheart. The genius teenager/young adult will most likely be inspired to suit up but not do so until her titular series. At the end of the first Black Panther, T’Challa started an outreach program, with Shuri (Wright) being made head of the science program. Suffice to say, Shuri, who is rumored to take up the mantel of Black Panther, will mentor Riri in some way.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be largely concerned with T’Challa’s legacy and that of Chadwick Boseman. It’s unclear whether Riri’s introduction was always meant for the sequel, but having the origin of a new hero be tied to both Iron Man and Black Panther, feels appropriate. While there is currently no release date for the Ironheart series, it will certainly release after the Black Panther sequel (July 2022). That said, other shows like Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Secret Invasion are all set to premiere in 2022, meaning fans may not see Riri suit up until end of 2022 or possibly 2023.
