Why Black Panther 2 Only Has One Credits Scene Explained By Producer

Though typically a Marvel staple, producer Nate Moore explains why Black Panther: Wakanda Forever only includes one mid-credits scene. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel will see the return of franchise stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Martin Freeman, and Angela Bassett. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will also mark the MCU debuts of Tenoch Huerta as the film's antagonist, Namor, as well as Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, better known as Ironheart, and Michaela Coel as Wakandan warrior Aneka.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will see the titular fictional nation rocked by the sudden death of Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa, and find themselves left without a protector and vulnerable to invading threats. One such force is that of Namor, the king of the underwater civilization known as Talokan, who looks to conquer Wakanda both for power and to protect his people after T'Challa's revelation about Wakanda at the end of the original Black Panther put the Talokan in jeopardy. Reflecting the real loss of Boseman in 2020, audiences have been hesitantly anxious for the sequel, wondering about its ability to continue both the franchise as a whole, as well as paying tribute to the late actor, but a producer behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever says one aspect of the film was purposely chosen for such.

While speaking with ComicBook.com to discuss the MCU sequel, Nate Moore opened up about why Black Panther: Wakanda Forever only has one credits scene. The producer explained that it primarily came down to the tone of the film, feeling it would be "disingenuous" for their goal with the movie. See what Moore explained below:

Not this time. Obviously, the weight of this movie is a bit different, and the tone of this movie is a bit different, and it felt, especially, once people see the film. We felt the ending was kind of poetic that to then go back and say, “Hey, there’s a tag at the end of the credits,” felt a little disingenuous tonally from what we were doing. Much like [Avengers] Endgame didn’t have a tag, this didn’t feel like a movie that needed it.

Given much of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is expected to act as a period of grief for both general audiences, those in the film and the characters in the story, it's commendable Moore and the Marvel team elected to stick to one credits scene for the film. As the Marvel exec notes, it wouldn't be the first time in the MCU a credits scene wasn't crafted to set up a future project, be it for emotional purposes or for the story of the project at hand, with Avengers: Endgame leaving many audiences reeling from the losses of Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chris Evans' Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, all in one film. Some MCU projects have also used their end-credits sequences simply to give audiences a fun bit of extra material, more than setting up some major future arc, some of which include Iron Man 3's therapy scene between Tony and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, and the original Black Panther showing Sebastian Stan's Bucky recovering from his brainwashing in Wakanda with the help of Shuri.

It is interesting to note that given there is confirmed to be one Black Panther: Wakanda Forever credits scene, Moore's mention of wanting to end the film on a proper poetic note could be one final, emotional ode to Chadwick Boseman. Early reactions are already glowing for the MCU sequel, with many already calling it the most emotional film yet in the franchise, putting expectations at an all-time high. Only time will tell if it can meet that high bar when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters on November 11.
