New Black Myth: Wukong development videos from indie studio Game Science showcases some of the game's massive bosses, as well as some funny behind-the-scenes production moments. Last year, Game Science revealed new action-adventure game Black Myth: Wukong with a gameplay trailer, and it quickly gained a following of prospective players. However, little information has been released this year, as no gameplay has been shown since February 2021.

What is known about the game is that it is being built using Unreal Engine 4 by a small team in China. Based on the legend of Sun Wukong from Journey to the WestBlack Myth: Wukong takes inspiration from both modern action games and the famous myth. Game Science has said it aims to create a unique single-player experience within the mythical lands of Chinese folklore, and the development team is comprised of former Tencent AAA talent.

A thread of tweets by analyst Daniel Ahmad shows new, dev diary-like footage of Black Myth: Wukong. Some of these feature behind-the-scenes development and some things originally seen in the original gameplay trailer. According to Ahmad, the videos were uploaded to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the game’s reveal. Though the footage is clearly a work in progress, the videos give a glimpse at some of the foes Wukong will be facing in his westward journey, one of which shows a huge boss holding other bosses like weapons to smash the player character in a test environment.

Ahmad suggests that one of the teaser videos demonstrates a potential production transition from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 - a significant change if correct. Ahmad also shares that the next trailer for Black Myth: Wukong will be premiering today, August 19, at 7 PM PDT/10 PM EDT, so the wait to see how the game has changed isn't going to be a long one.

Game Science has previously stated Black Myth: Wukong is a planned trilogy's first entry. The developer is taking direct inspiration from 2018’s God of War, which was made to look like one continuous camera shot from start to finish. It also appears to take a Soulslike approach to combat, with parrying and movement being an important part of moment-to-moment gameplay tactics.

With luck, Game Science might narrow down Black Myth: Wukong's release window or move it forward in a new trailer, as it's currently slated for 2023. The first trailer was used as a recruitment tool to build up the game's development team, so it will be interesting to see how much influence a larger team had on progress over last year's showing.
