Black Mirror is comprised of stand-alone episodes that occasionally feature some crossover material, but mostly in the form of easter-egg type cameo appearances. Each episode is host to a unique storyline and cast of characters.

The show is known for it's dark and often disturbing content which gives way to many unfortunate characters that aren't so easy to sit with. But, with such characters come breaks of relief and the occasional narrative of hope. Here are five of the most despicable duos in Black Mirror, and five that we keep coming back for.

Best: Susan And Lacie In "Nosedive"

Lacie giving her drunk speecha t the wedding in the Black Mirror episode Nosedive

Susan and Lacie are a great combination of personalities because they are opposites of each other, and yet Susan knows exactly what Lacie is going through and why she is the way she is. Lacie is obsessed with garnering public approval and getting good ratings on her social media. Susan has become a societal outcast for this very reason, as she refuses to comply. This attitude wakes Lacie up and helps her re-assess her values.

Worst: Ashley And Aunt In "Rachel, Jack And Ashley Too"

Miley Cyrus in Black Mirror Season 5 Rachel Jack and Ashley Too

Ashley and her Aunt are a perfect example of a toxic, abusive relationship taken to the extreme. The storyline is placed in a future where the Aunt can use Ashley's brainwaves to steal her music, but this serves as an adequate metaphor for the exploitation of performers at the hands of those who claim to have their best interest at heart.

Best: Frank And Amy In "Hang The DJ"

Frank and Amy are the couple we all want to be and want to root for, but this reason they are is more than just romantic sentimentality. They brighten up the scene when they are together and make the tensions of their strange society feels less immense. This is the ideal dynamic between any two persons who care about each other, or, ideally, just people in general-—to lighten things up.

Worst: Danny And Karl In "Striking Vipers"

Danny and Karl are supposed to portray a complex, thought-provoking relationship—and they do... yet, at the end of the day, they are mostly unlikable. They are almost sympathetic characters when it becomes apparent that their obsession with online sex via their virtual realities may indicate that they are harboring repressed love for one another, but it turns out they aren't, they just get off on having sex with virtual fictions of each other. It's a little interesting, but mostly disturbing.

Best: Chris And Jaden In "Smithereens"

Chris and Jaden shouldn't be considered a duo at all, really, as Jaden is technically a hostage to Chris—but the reason they are one of the best, one could say, "pairings" of characters in the series is because of how complex their interaction is.

By the end of the episode, Jaden has completely flipped in perspective, and, after learning about Chris actually cares about his well-being, and all of his own choice, Chris tells him to leave the car, but Jaden refuses because he doesn't want Christ to die. It's dark, beautiful, and very well done.

Worst: Frank And Nicola In "Hang The DJ"

If Frank and Amy are the dream couple, it's made even more evident by their direct contrast to the coupling of Frank and Nicola in the same episode. Frank and Nicola are possibly the worst match imaginable; Nicola is cruel and has no sense of humor, the opposite of Amy. If the show's goal was to give us a nightmare scenario of a person with which to spend the rest of one's life, this is it.

Best: Yorkie And Kelly In "San Junipero"

Yorkie and Kelly are exhilarating and heartbreaking all at once. This is the episode that queer viewers come back to again and again, and it applies to all ages; the two are young women at first, appealing to younger audiences, but we later find that they are actually older women taking advantage of a virtual program. It's an exploration of queer love throughout the ages and of two people who learn from and stand by each other.

Worst: Martha And Ash In "Be Right Back"

Black Mirror Be Right Back

Martha and Ash, or rather, the re-creation of Ash after he dies, are a terrible duo. Firstly, it was doomed from the start because the relationship began out of Martha's desperate grief and obsession with needing her dead husband back.

Secondly, even if Ash got the technical conversational style down—which he couldn't—he doesn't have the bodily habits of a human, which makes up for a large part of sharing a life. We don't realize how much time we spend eating or brushing our teeth or taking a nap next to a loved one.

Best: Bing And Abi In "Fifteen Million Merits"

Bing and Abi are a duo we root for, but they are also a tragic pair. Their story doesn't end well, and it's likely one that viewers don't often return to. What's valuable about Abi and Bing is that they transcend the behaviors encouraged by their environments. In a world of cheap distractions, Abi loves to sing a classic song of love and Bing closes his eyes to the invasively pornographic screens, instead preferring to gaze at shy Abi.

Worst: Marie And Sara In "Arkangel"

Black Mirror Arkangel chip

Marie wants to be a good mother to Sara, but it all goes wrong. It's easy to say that it's her fault, that installing software that allows one to see everything their child does would obviously garner disastrous results for a relationship, but, if we look at the modern American "helicopter" mothers, it's less difficult to imagine. This duo is a warning against helicopter parenting and the perils of invading personal space.
