The CW’s newest superhero series, Black Lightning, is just a few weeks away from its premiere, which means the network is busy getting the word out to as many potential viewers as possible with new promos and an official synopsis. The series promises to be unlike The CW’s other DC Comics offerings, which is why, for now anyway, Black Lightning won’t be affiliated with the Arrowverse. That may be a cause for concern for some fans who’ve grown used to the idea of shared universes, but the decision will allow the new series the room it needs to develop on its own. And from the looks of the new promo its clear the show won’t have any trouble attracting fans of the comic book character.

So far, the series’ promos have played up leading man Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce, and how his role as both a father to two daughters and as the principal of a charter school help him stand out from the usual lineup of billionaire playboys and/or young heroes who have yet to take on the responsibility of parenthood. But Black Lightning also stands out by virtue of it skipping over the hero’s origin — at least at first. When we meet him for the first time, Jefferson Pierce will have been retired from his side job as Black Lightning for nearly a decade, which makes the series premiere the vigilante’s ostensible rebirth.

That’s not too difficult a setup for a new series, but The CW was nice enough to share an official synopsis nonetheless, one that is accompanied by the new ‘Power Up’ promo that shows Black Lightning isn’t a man who’s willing to pull his punches. Check out the synopsis below:

“Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Ann McClain), and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe-haven for young people in a neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero in his community.

Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning, but he left the Superhero days behind. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought.

Christine Adams, James Remar, Damon Gupton and Marvin Jones III also star. The episode was written and directed by Salim Akil.”

So there you have it; Jefferson Pierce is back in action after almost 10 years sitting on the bench. Despite his time away, it doesn’t look as though his powers have decreased in the slightest. Hitting criminals with a barrage of electrified punches is a nice touch, and, like a certain Man Without Fear, it seems that Black Lightning also has a penchant for busting heads in stairwells.

It looks as though Black Lightning has a lot going for it. That  bodes well for the series premiere, which will drop into the prime post-The Flash time slot previously held by Legends of Tomorrow. With the crew of the Waverider on extended hiatus until February, it’s good for The CW that there’s a new hero ready to fill the void.
