Warning! Spoilers for Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade #5 below.

A new Black Knight has been named in the Marvel Universe, as Professor Jacks resolves to share Dane Whitman's duties as a hero. Having defeated Mordred and learned that Jacks is Dane's daughter in Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade #5, the duo reforged the Ebony items into a siege, allowing them to work together as one Black Knight.

Marvel Comics has done some serious work to reinvent the Black Knight for modern readers. The hero's origin has changed considerably ahead of his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - where Kit Harington will play Dane Whitman in the upcoming Eternals film. Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade revealed Whitman is actually an ancestor of King Arthur and that his Ebony Blade is fueled by darkness and rage, not by being worthy. Whitman's dealt with King Arthur's son Modred, who wants Camelot for himself and quite nearly killed Dane and forged the Ebony Crown.

In Curse of the Ebony Blade #5 by Si Spurrier, Sergio Davila, Sean Parsons, Arif Prianto, and VC's Cory Petit, Mordred believes he's killed Professor Jacks and watches Dane Whitman recount a story as he's lying on the ground dying. The villain uses his Listenr app and the Ebony Crown to control people listening to his message, urging them to build a new kingdom. As Mordred begins constructing a new Camelot, Dane tells the tale of his former partner, who was pregnant and dying of cancer. As Professor Jacks returns from the dead, Whitman says drinking from the Ebony Chalice showed him Modred's entire plan, before revealing Jacks is actually his daughter. After defeating Mordred, Dane forges a new Ebon Siege. Dane and Jacks agree to become a single hero, as they'll take turns as Black Knight, while the other sits on the siege and guides them.

Black Knight Marvel Comics

It's quite the ending for Mordred, as he believed he ended Dane's bloodline. But his arrogance and misogyny meant he didn't even consider the possibility he could have a daughter capable of wielding the Ebony Blade. Ultimately, Jacks doesn't die at his hands and helps defeat the villain.

Dane and Jacks are both very broken people who have experienced plenty of hardships throughout their lives. But, Whitman realizes that by sharing his power with his daughter, they can be a much stronger Black Knight than ever before. It's also a great way to split the corruptive force between them, allowing them to rest when the other uses it. Of course, it's not the most likely partnership, but when have things ever been easy for Dane? With his daughter by his side, a new Black Knight has been formed.
