Michael Jai White is an actor and martial artist who first rose to fame playing the title superhero in 1997's Spawn. While the movie itself received mixed reviews, Michael Jai White's Spawn performance was very well received. While he's also known for his supporting turns in the likes of The Dark Knight or Exit Wounds, he's also made a name for himself with some quality straight to DVD action movies.

White's co-starred with Scott Adkins in the likes of Accident Man and all-star martial arts team-up Triple Threat, and he's also appeared in and directed the last two Never Back Down movies. Easily one of White's most popular movies is 2009's Black Dynamite. This was a loving homage to the blaxploitation films Michael Jai White grew up on, and he plays a badass ex-CIA officer avenging his brother's death in a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top.
Black Dynamite nailed the tone and look of the movies it was spoofing perfectly and gave White the chance to flex his comedy and action muscles. The movie has since become a cult favorite, but what are the odds of Black Dynamite 2?
Black Dynamite Spawned An Animated Series
Michael Jai White and most of the cast soon returned to the world of Black Dynamite for an Adult Swim series that debuted in 2011. The likes of Bryon Minns' - who also co-wrote the original - Bullhorn returned despite dying in the movie, and the series received good reviews for both its seasons.
The Outlaw Johnny Black Is A Spiritual Sequel
While not quite Black Dynamite 2, in 2018 Michael Jai White unveiled The Outlaw Johnny Black, a western in the same vein. White launched an Indiegogo campaign for the project, which included a teaser trailer showing off the movie's story and tone. The Outlaw Johnny Black follows the titular outlaw (White), who dons the guise of a preacher to help save a small town.
Sadly, The Outlaw Johnny Black fell short of its funding goals at the time, and while White reaffirmed his commitment to making the movie, updates went quiet. In 2019 the star updated the movie's status on Twitter, revealing it was about to go into production.
Black Dynamite & The Outlaw Johnny Black Are Both Happening
In a May 2021 Variety article announcing the launch of White's Jaigantic Studios, the article also revealed the status of The Outlaw Johnny Black. The movie - which White also directed - is currently in post-production and is set to arrive on Thanksgiving 2021.
The Variety article also reveals that Michael Jai White is gearing up to star in and direct Black Dynamite 2 for his new studio too. A release date for the sequel has yet to be revealed, but after years of waiting, fans will no doubt be thrilled to hear the fuse has been lit on a direct sequel.
