'Black Death' Trailer & Gallery

Black Death written by Dario Poloni and directed by Christopher Smith

Last year, we heard about three independent movies that had action fans excited – The Tournament, Solomon Kane and Black Death.

The Tournament, while receiving positive festival reviews, only managed to score a DVD distribution deal. Solomon Kane also received high marks at the Toronto International Film Festival and San Diego Comic Con in 2009, which did lead to a distribution deal with Lionsgate, but the film hasn’t managed to score a U.S. theatrical release as of yet.

The last hope of watching one of these independent action films at a theater in the States lies with the medieval period piece Black Death. In some fantastic news, Magnet Films has recently announced it would be picking up the film for U.S. release in early 2011.

If you aren't familiar with Black Death then check out the official synopsis for the film before watching the trailer below:

Plague-ridden medieval England: Bodies lie scattered in their hundreds, the country is in turmoil. One hope remains, rumors of a village that is unaffected by the deadly disease. As God’s ambassador, young monk Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) is tasked in leading the fearsome knight Ulrich (Sean Bean) and his group of mercenaries to the remote village. Their quest is to hunt down a necromancer - someone able to bring the dead back to life. Their journey is treacherous and filled with danger; encountering deadly bandits and vicious witch-burnings that will put their faith to the ultimate test. Though it’s upon entering the village that their true horror begins.

Sounds pretty interesting, right? Well, if that intrigued you then the trailer should really seal the deal.

Black Death stars fan-favorite Sean Bean (Cash, Death Race 2), John Lynch (The Tournament), Jamie Ballard, Andy Nyman (Severance), Johnny Harris (Dorian Gray), Tygo Gernandt, Emun Elliott and Eddie Redmayne (The Other Boleyn Girl). It was written by Dario Poloni (Wilderness) and directed by Christopher Smith (Creep).

Smith is quickly becoming one of my favorite new directors after his last two offerings - the horror/comedy Severance and the psychological/thriller Triangle. I really enjoy both his storytelling technique and directing style. Judging by the trailer, Black Death should continue my interest in his work.

The official website for Black Death has some great information on the film including a breakdown of each of the main characters, as well as a contest to win a signed script from the film. With this movie flying so low under the radar there shouldn’t be many people signing up - so your chances of winning are pretty good. :-)

There isn’t an official release date for Black Death but it should be in theaters around February or March of 2011.
