New artwork imagines Jurnee Smollett in a comic-accurate costume for Black Canary. As of late, Warner Bros and DC Films have been working to churn out more and more feature-length projects centered on both well-known and obscure characters from all over the franchise. The cinematic slate for the DCEU universe is fully stacked until mid-2023, and even beyond that, several projects are in early stages of development. But besides the theatrical tentpoles, there are also some films being developed exclusively for HBO Max. Batgirl and Blue Beetle, for instance, are two such projects that will arrive solely on the streaming service. Some other projects have been commissioned for the platform, and of them, the most noteworthy is perhaps a solo Black Canary movie.

Announced to be in the works last month, Black Canary reunites actress Jurnee Smollett and screenwriter Misha Green after the Emmy-nominated series Lovecraft Country. The movie will see Smollett reprise her role as the titular nightclub singer Dinah Lance, following her previous appearance in 2020's Birds of Prey. Smollett's performance in the movie was a hit among fans, and it immediately led to a social media campaign rallying for a spin-off series for her character. But instead of heading in the TV show direction, DC found Smollett better suited for a solo film, and thus it ordered a Black Canary movie. At the moment, plot specifics are slim, and no other talents have been confirmed for the film either.

Now, new artwork by digital artist datrintiart imagines what Smollett could look like as Dinah in Black Canary. The rendition is decidedly different from Smollett's look in Birds of Prey, although it hues closer to the Black Canary's comic-book appearance, showing her in a costume that Justice Society of America and Justice League of America junkies are best familiar with. One thing that fans already know about Smollett's Dinah is that the character was approached rather differently in Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey. Her backstory remained mostly shrouded, including her relationship with her mother, and Black Canary's superpowers weren't also on full display, except for that one "canary cry" shown in a later battle with the Sionis Gang. As for her look, she wore flashy outfits different from those she ever wore in the comics, and her hair was also noticeably different from her comic counterpart's. Since Black Canary has only just been announced, it's still unclear if the new movie will do things differently as compared to Birds of Prey. But if it does, it will surely be exciting to see Smollett under a spotlight that better represents her comics origins.

By all means, the new vivid portrait is the perfect interpretation of just how fantastic Smollett would look if Black Canary decides to give the superheroine her comic-book costume. The choker, black jacket, and fishnet stockings are all defining features of Black Canary's ensemble that the character's original creators Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino had deliberately created to connote images of a sexualized yet strong-headed, clandestine, female crime fighter. The original design was met with an overwhelmingly positive response, which signifies that if it is brought to life, not only would it honor the creators' vision for the character, but it would also captivate fans who have learned to love Dinah for her powerful and irresistible demeanor.
