Will Netflix move forward with #blackAF season 2? If so, when will new episodes release, and what will the storyline be? Starring Rashida Jones and Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, the family sitcom mirrors the male lead's real life, but with a slight narrative twist. Netflix released #blackAF season 1 in April 2020.

In #blackAF season 1 on Netflix, the Barris family attempts to better understand each other through healthy arguments. The series is narrated by Drea Barris (Iman Benson), the second-oldest of six children, who hopes to attend NYU film school, and frequently pokes fun at her egotistical father. Jones co-stars as Joya Barris, the family matriarch who tries to sustain a cool mom image while stressing out about her personal and professional responsibilities. The #blackAF season 1 supporting cast includes Genneya Walton (Chloe Barris), Scarlet Spencer (Izzy Barris), Justin Claiborne (Pops Barris), Ravi Cabot-Conyers (Kam Barris), and Richard Gardenhire Jr. (Brooklyn Barris).

The Barris family vacations in Fiji during the #blackAF season 1 finale, but collectively struggle to embrace their individuality. Kenya gets worried about his children, and realizes that he's being ghosted by Joya. Here's everything we expect for #blackAF season 2 on Netflix.

#blackAF Season 2 Renewal

Netflix hasn't ordered #blackAF season 2, and probably won't make an official decision about the series' future until several weeks after the release date. In 2018, Barris signed a production deal with the streaming service, which means that a second installment of his family sitcom will likely be greenlit. Expect #blackAF season 2 to be announced before June 2020.

#blackAF Season 2 Release Date

If Netflix orders #blackAF season 2 before summer 2020, new episodes could be filmed later in the year, at least if COVID-19 doesn't shut down production. Of course, the cast and crew may elect to delay the filming process until everybody is comfortable and ready to proceed. If everything moves forward as planned, #blackAF season 2 will likely release on Friday, April 16, 2021.

#blackAF Season 2 Story

Rashida Jones and Kenya Barris in #BlackAF Season 1 on Netflix

In the #blackAF season 1 finale, Kenya loses confidence in his parenting abilities when Chloe's boyfriend, Marquise (Doug Hall), teaches Pops how to swim and then saves Joya from drowning. Meanwhile, Drea sorts through her feelings after experiencing a first kiss with both a male and a female, and Joya takes some time to balance work with play. The familial conflict is temporarily resolved when Kenya rents an island, and then apologizes to his wife.

Based on Drea's closing narration, #blackAF season 2 will be grounded by familial conflict — the good kind that brings people together. Now that Joya has a book to promote and Kenya's ego has been checked, the power dynamics will presumably shift in the next group of episodes. Kenya is known for his creative work, yet #blackAF season 2 on Netflix may heavily spotlight his parental work while the rest of the family members pursue their respective goals.
