All the changes to the DCEU in recent years did not impact Black Adam, according to the film's producer. Dwayne Johnson had been circling the role of Black Adam since as far back as 2007, and he officially signed on to join the DCEU in 2014, originally intending to play the villain in the first Shazam!. However, Warner Bros. and DC decided to spin Black Adam off into his own film, and after delays due to the actor's busy schedule and the COVID-19 pandemic, the film is finally set to arrive in theaters on October 21, 2022.

Since being first announced, the DCEU has undergone multiple changes. Leadership over the franchise has changed multiple times, with various projects like the Ben Affleck-led version of The Batman, the Cyborg movie, and the Deathstroke film being canceled. The upcoming The Flash movie has undergone multiple director changes and release delays since Black Adam was announced. With Johnson's project arriving into a very different DCEU than when the project was first green-lit, and one has to wonder if the many behind-the-scenes changes at the studio have impacted the film.

In Screen Rant's exclusive interview with producer Hiram Garcia, he confirms that Black Adam was not affected by the various changes going on at WB and the DCEU at large. Garcia confirms that they knew they were going to focus on Black Adam and the JSA, and that remained true throughout all the other alterations to the franchise. He says they are continuing to build out from the corner of the universe they have created, hinting at more to come. Check out Garcia's full response below:

Luckily, we didn't [have to go back to the drawing board], because we've been functionally within our section. Basically, we knew the characters we had: we had Black Adam and JSA, and we were launching things attached to that. Our world has stayed very much intact, so even though there has been some changes, it hasn't really affected us. That's been a very fortunate thing. There's been a lot going on, but we've been able to maintain our bubble and our lane. We continue to build it out.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson as Black Adam

While Black Adam is part of the DCEU, and effectively a Shazam! spinoff, the film is also being planned as the start of its own corner of the larger franchise. In November 2021, Garcia previously hinted that Black Adam spinoff movie announcements would be arriving soon, possibly for the JSA, or solo-films for characters like Hawkman or Doctor Fate. The HBO Max Wonder Twins movie was rumored to be part of the plans to build out the Black Adam franchise, as it was set to be directed by Black Adam screenwriter Adam Sztykiel, although the movie was ultimately cancelled.

More changes are in store at DC, as the newly appointed Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has big plans to revitalize the superhero brand. The studio is reportedly looking for their own Kevin Feige-esque figure and even consulted with Joker director Todd Phillips, who is also currently developing a sequel titled Joker: Folie à Deux with Joaquin Phoenix returning. While Black Adam was not impacted by the changes behind the scenes, depending on the box-office numbers, it could be a major influence on the DCEU moving forward.
