The Black Adam movie reportedly won't start production until 2021. Back in 2014, Dwayne Johnson officially confirmed he would play the DC Comics character onscreen; originally, the plan was for Johnson to co-star in Shazam, but Warner Bros. eventually decided to make a Black Adam standalone movie. Since then, the project's remained in development, but it only recently started to gain traction. Last year, Jaume Collet-Serra signed on to direct, and Black Adam received a 2021 release date.

Black Adam was gearing up to commence filming this summer, but the project was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. With Hollywood only recently starting to resume high-profile productions (like Jurassic World: Dominion), there hasn't been much in the way of recent Black Adam updates. Earlier this year, Johnson admitted he was concerned Black Adam could be delayed, and now it looks like shooting has been pushed back. And it'll be a bit of a wait before The Rock finally gets to play Black Adam.

According to THRBlack Adam probably won't start filming until some point in 2021. Before Black Adam starts up, Johnson needs to finish Netflix's Red Notice, which was in the midst of principal photography when the shutdowns first took place.

Black Adam is currently scheduled to come out next December, so it's possible its release date will have to be pushed back. That will obviously depend on the Black Adam production timeline and when work actually starts. If it's able to complete principal photography in early 2021, that conceivably would give Collet-Serra and his crew enough time to handle post-production responsibilities (including the standard reshoots). That said, should Black Adam production be delayed further into 2021, WB will probably have no choice but to move its release. The prospect of a Dwayne Johnson-led comic book movie coming out over the lucrative holiday season is appealing for a studio, but it wouldn't do anybody any favors if the final product was rushed for the sake of meeting a set release date.

WB will undoubtedly be monitoring resuming suspended productions carefully (including some of their own, like The Batman) before making any decisions on the Black Adam schedule. Right now, major blockbusters like Jurassic World: Dominion and Uncharted haven't encountered any health & safety issues, but they're still in the earliest days of getting back to work. If those projects are able to be completed with minimal setbacks at best, then that will show WB and other studios the protocols are working as intended and things can start to get back to normal. Hopefully it all works out, and Black Adam doesn't have to wait much longer to get in front of the cameras.
