Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam has lost its 2021 release date. The former WWE star has been trying to join the DC Extended Universe for years as the powerful anti-hero Black Adam, but it hasn't been an easy road. It wasn't until recently that plans for a solo Black Adam movie started to come together, with director Jaume Collet-Serra helping move the film towards a planned December 2021 release date.

Despite COVID-19 forcing a change to the production schedule, there has been plenty of news about Black Adam recently. Noah Centineo was confirmed to play Atom Smasher, a member of the Justice Society of America, and Johnson revealed plenty of other details during DC FanDome. It was also recently revealed that Aldis Hodge has landed the role of Hawkman in Black Adam, which many took to be a great sign at how the movie was making progress.

Unfortunately, Black Adam has hit a bit of a roadblock again. Warner Bros. just announced a major change to the upcoming DCEU, and while that meant multiple films have been delayed, Black Adam lost its December 22, 2021 release date. No new release date has been set for Johnson's superhero movie at this time, with Black Adam's release date listed as "TBD." The delay for Black Adam allowed WB to move up the release of The Matrix 4.

The Rock Black Adam

Black Adam losing its 2021 release date is just one part of what proved to be significant changes to the DCEU's slate. As of now, Wonder Woman 1984 is keeping its December 2020 release date, but the delays made The Suicide Squad the only DC movie in 2021. This is because The Batman was delayed to March 2022. It joins The Flash, although Ezra Miller's solo movie was pushed from June to November. Meanwhile, Shazam: Fury of the Gods moved out of 2022 and will now be released in 2023.

With these changes to WB and DC's movie schedules, the decision to not give Black Adam a new release date is puzzling. It is one of two movies impacted by these delays that is now listed as TBD, and the other one is Minecraft. There's no question that Black Adam is a bigger property for them and was making progress very recently to begin filming in early 2021. WB didn't put any new films on The Flash's old June 2022 slot, though, so it is possible that this could be when Black Adam will be released. However, the studio clearly doesn't have that planned right now, otherwise, such an announcement would've already been made. Now we'll just have to wait and see what new release date Black Adam eventually gets.
