Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia shared some details about Aldis Hodge's Hawkman character in the upcoming film. Black Adam is currently set for release in July 2022 and will see the title character, played by Dwayne Johnson, face off against the Justice Society of America. One of the founding members of the Justice Society of America in the comics is Hawkman, who will make his big-screen debut in Black Adam, played by Hodge.

Hawkman was introduced in 1940's Flash Comics #1 created by Gardner Fox and Dennis Neville. The character was originally an archeologist named Carter Hall, who discovered he was the reincarnation of an Egyptian Prince named Khufu. Over the years, he has reincarnated into a number of different souls. When DC relaunched many of their heroes in the Silver Age with new origins, Hawkman was retooled to be an alien police officer from the planet Thanagar named Kartar Hol. The characters' various origins have often been a source of confusion for writers and fans at DC Comics, with the different adaptations trying to merge the two elements to make a unified Hawkman origin.

In a Screen Rant exclusive interview with Garcia, he shed some details on the version of Hawkman in the film. Garcia mentions how this version of Hawkman has been around for a while and references his various reincarnations, confirming the character will be similar in origin to the original Hawkman. As Hodge is playing a superhero there is certain shape audiences expect him to be in, and Garcia says that Hodge will not disappoint. Garcia said:

"And he brought such a weight and poise and coolness to Hawkman. Hawkman's already such a beloved character, but to watch Aldis take control of the character and portray a performance that alludes to a character who has dealt with so much, has been around for so many years. Obviously, reincarnations, iterations, and for fans that are familiar with Hawkman, they know what a bit of a tragic past and love story he has. That Aldis was really able to tap into it. And not to mention, he also got in incredible shape. I remember the first time we finally got in person in Atlanta and he was jacked. I like to call it the Dwayne Johnson effect where any actor who's around Dwayne's like, "Oh, I've got to up my game." And he came in, in incredible shape. His arms were huge. And just, and he's also really skilled just on top of his acting, but physically as an athlete and as a tactician, when it comes to martial arts and so forth.

He had covered every aspect. He had dedicated so much time to wanting to cover everything with Hawkman that I think fans are going to really be excited with the energy he brings to the character. And also just the coolness that he takes his character who's been around forever. But seeing it through Aldis' eyes is really fun."

While the Man of Steel tie-in comic made reference to Thanagar, it appears that the DCEU is going to have a Hawkman whose origins stick closer to the one found in the original comic, possibly in a way to tie the character's origins with Black Adam as both characters have ties to ancient Egypt. The detail about a tragic past and love story is a clear reference to Hawkgirl, who was in the original plans for Black Adam but was taken out and replaced with Cyclone. While she may not be in the film, it is likely the character will be referenced, and possibly Hawkman's other lives in his reincarnation cycle like the 5th-century character The Silent Knight or the old gunslinger Nighthawk.

Hodge's Hawkman could reappear in future DC films. Garcia already confirmed there will be Black Adam spin-off films announcements coming in the near future, which could mean a Hawkman movie could be in the works. This would not be the first time DC and Warner Bros. attempted to make a Hawkman movie as they previously tried in the early 2010s, but the film never came to pass as the studio put their focus on Man of Steel. Black Adam could be the stepping stone for a Hawkman solo film in theaters or on HBO Max. A Hawkman solo movie could be the way to introduce Hawkgirl to the DCEU and further grow the franchise with a popular character.
