Black Adam is intentionally missing DC superhero Hawkgirl, reveals Hawkman actor Aldis Hodge. The long-awaited upcoming movie will officially introduce Dwayne Johnson as a superhero in the DC Extended Universe. Originally supposed to appear as a villain in Shazam!, Johnson was attached to the Black Adam script as early as 2014. Also serving as executive producer, Johnson stars as the titular anti-hero in Black Adam, chronicling his integration into modern society following his release from a wrongful 5,000-year prison sentence. The Justice Society of America is faced with reigning in the formidable Black Adam when they attempt to reform the warrior's abilities for good.

Black Adam is confirmed to include a host of characters from the original comics, including the highly-anticipated Justice Society of America. While Carter Hall/Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Albert "Al" Rothstein /Atom Smasher (Noah Cenitneo), and Maxine Hunkel /Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) complete the lineup, some fans have noticed the absence of Hawkgirl, a pivotal character in the comics. Johnson tweeted in 2020, admitting she was originally slated to be included in Black Adam, but those plans somehow fell apart.

Now, Hawkman actor Aldis Hodge reveals the reason behind Hawkgirl's absence in Black Adam is intentional, per Comicbook. The star shared that although he can not say how the character's absence could factor into a potential sequel, there is a reason behind it. Check out Hodge's response below:

"Oh, I actually can't speak to that, her factoring into the film story-wise, because… Yeah, I can't speak to how it would factor into the film aside from the fact that it would still be awesome, ... It would be amazing, but her not being there is intentional. We have room to grow, so however we are allowed to go further and we can explore different avenues, hopefully that is one of the avenues that we do get to touch on. But everything has a meaning and a purpose."

Will Hawkgirl Be In Black Adam 2 Or Other DC Movies?

Hawkgirl in DC Comics

While it's clear Hawkgirl is not in Black Adam, it seems plausible for the superhero to be introduced in Black Adam 2, given her presence in the comics and Hodge's response. As Hodge highlights, the franchise has room to grow, as this is only beginning. This could mean Hawkgirl's entrance is in the works, as she lives countless lives as an immortal warrior, constantly reinventing herself and her abilities.

On the other hand, Hawkgirl's absence in Black Adam could mean something happened to her, potentially giving the franchise room to explore her and Hawkman's backstory. If Hawkgirl is introduced in Black Adam 2, this could pose some challenges for Black Adam's canon, meaning it would make more sense for a prequel to occur. As the character originally appears as Shiera Sanders Hall, wife to Alan Carter/Hawkman and immortal soulmate, her current form is Kendra Saunders in the latest installment of the comics. Hawkgirl's relationship with Hawkman will need to be touched upon in Black Adam if she is later to be included, or some backstory will need to be established for the character if she appears in the future. However, this could be revealed in a potential prequel to Black Adam, throwing the spotlight on the pair. Hopefully, audiences will have a clearer answer when Black Adam hits theaters this Friday, October 21.
