Recently released concept art for Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate shows a very different costume to that shown in recent teasers for DC’s Black Adam. A moniker held by multiple characters in the DC comic book universe, the original version of the character (Kent Nelson) was first created in 1940 and would go on to become one of the founding members of the superhero team known as the Justice Society of America. Trained as a sorcerer by the ancient wizard Nabu the Wise, Nelson has also been gifted the magical Helm of Fate which grants its wearer near god-like powers.

Having previously appeared in live-action in both the Superman prequel series Smallville, and more recently in the CW’s Stargirl, Brosnan was announced as the first big-screen iteration of the character in March last year. Up until recently, it was not clear what Brosnan’s costume would look like in the final film as much of the actor’s time on set was actually performed wearing a motion-capture suit. Last week, however, Warner Bros. released a DCEU 2022 trailer that included new footage from each of their upcoming films, including The Batman, Black Adam, The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

While this new trailer offered DC fans their first proper glimpse of Brosnan’s Doctor Fate, a new piece of concept art shared by Bosslogic on Instagram suggests that the filmmakers were toying with a very different design for the character’s costume. While the version shown in last week’s trailer is in direct keeping with Doctor Fate’s traditional comic-book look, the original concept art features a far more ornate, loose fitting and ancient-looking spin on his trademark apparel. As undoubtedly one of the more instantly recognizable components of any superhero film, the enormous work which goes into creating a visually appealing superhero costume should not go understated. Where once superhero film franchises like The X-Men would intentionally steer away from using more traditional comic book looks, in recent years studios have put an enormous amount of effort into creating costumes that not only pay homage to characters' origins on the page but also look good on screen. Balancing accuracy and aesthetics across the two very different mediums is not always easy, but it is something fans are certainly becoming more accustomed to seeing.

Everything seen about Dwayne Johnson’s DCEU debut so far indicates that DC are intent of delivering a film of epic proportions. The recent trailer not only wowed audiences with Doctor Fate’s reveal, but also Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman and Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher. While Bosslogic’s amazing concept art may have undergone several changes to shape Brosnan’s final look on screen, DC fans will certainly appreciate the enormous effort being put into making Black Adam the best film it possibly can be.
