According to producer Hiram Garcia, characters introduced in DC's Black Adam could get their own spinoff films in the future. With Dwayne Johnson set to star, Black Adam is based on a comic book superhero of the same name. Although little is known about the film at this point, the comic version of the character is a corrupt ancient Egyptian leader who fights his way to the present day in order to face off against his nemesis, Captain Marvel, also known as Shazam.
In addition to Johnson, the film will also feature Sarah Shahi as Isis, Noah Centineo as Albert Rothstein, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Djimon Hounsou as the Wizard, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. The film is written by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Sohrab Noshirvani, Adam Sztykiel, and Rory Haines. The film has already been confirmed to push its PG-13 rating with its high kill count and Johnson has expressed interest in continuing beyond just one film and creating a crossover of sorts between Marvel and DC characters.
In a new interview with Collider, Garcia has gone into more depth regarding his vision for the future of the Black Adam universe and expressed his desire to create spinoffs with characters introduced in the film. While Garcia didn't go into any detail regarding future plans for Black Adam characters, he does mention the importance of finding a good home for any spinoff content, implying that, if a theatrical film doesn't work for a particular character, perhaps a film or series on HBO Max could happen. "We've never viewed this as just a one-off movie. I'm such a gigantic comic book nerd and fan, and I love this universe so much, if you can tell from my excitement about talking about all these things. I've always gotten into this with a vision of, 'This is the story we want to tell, this is where we would love to see this go, this is how we would see multiple pictures play out, possibly including spinoffs for individual characters,' but there's always been a rough, kind of loose outline in our head on an imaginary whiteboard of how we'd want to do it. As we're making that, we start to look at that a little bit more. But, again, ultimately, we need the movie to be received well and we want fans to like it, but there's 100% a vision of what we'd like to be doing in a multiple picture aspect when it comes to Black Adam and the JSA."
"I think when it comes to the DC Universe — this is the great thing about being at Warner and DC — is you have gigantic conversations with all the tentacles there of being able to generate content and tell these stories. So we have met with everyone from every corner of DC Universe about how we can bring certain characters to life, how we can continue and build out the worlds on some of these characters, and it's just about finding the right home for it. But nothing is left off the table when you're dealing with characters of this nature and scale and in terms of how we can best deliver more content to the fans. So that continues to go, and you're going to start to hear announcements regarding some of these characters and who we're going to finally be able to tell a little bit more on going forward."
Although it seems Garcia has an interest in expanding the DCEU and creating spinoff properties, he also makes clear that plans for more movies or series will only move forward if Black Adam is a success and if fans want more. With rich comic lore to dig into for all of these characters, there's plenty of material available for Garcia to adapt. Characters like Doctor Fate, Hawkman, and Isis all have extensive backstories in the comics with enough material to explore in films or limited series.
As has been seen most recently with The Suicide Squad and the upcoming spinoff series Peacemaker, Warner Bros. has shown their willingness to invest in additional properties outside of their tentpole feature films. If Black Adam proves to be a success, which seems likely given Dwayne Johnson's involvement and his history as a box office draw, it certainly seems that audiences will eventually get Black Adam spinoffs in some form. While some characters, like Isis and Hawkman, for example, seem better suited to an HBO Max series, others, like Doctor Fate, could potentially be big enough draws to carry their own film. With Marvel diversifying its content and launching successful spinoff shows like Wandavision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (in addition to its numerous spinoff films), DC seems poised to move into this space as well following the release of Black Adam next July.
