Harley Quinn teams up with the Birds of Prey, eventually, in the Honest Trailer for the R-rated DC movie. In the comic books, the Birds of Prey are a superhero team made up entirely of female characters, with Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress and Batwoman at the core of the group. Many other DC characters have joined that core four on the rotating BoP squad over the years, including Poison Ivy, Catwoman and Katana of Suicide Squad fame. Harley Quinn is one character however who has never figured in the Birds of Prey picture.

Even though Quinn never has been a member of Birds of Prey in the comics, when DC finally got around to making a BoP movie they decided the squad should share the spotlight with the former Dr. Harleen Quinzel. Of course, Margot Robbie’s take on Quinn was already popular with audiences after her cinematic debut in Suicide Squad, so it made sense to include her in any all-female superhero movie coming to theaters – even if it meant putting her on a team she was never a part of in official lore. When the movie arrived however, it became clear that despite the movie being called Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), it was in fact Quinn who was the star of the show with actual BoP members Black Canary and Huntress taking a decided backseat.

Indeed, the lack of a genuine team-up element to the Quinn-dominated Birds of Prey is one of the main complaints in the new Honest Trailers video for the DC film (via Screen Junkies). In addition to that problem, the trailer addresses the controversy around the movie’s R rating, which in many people’s eyes helped hurt the film’s box office by excluding potential young fans. See all the BoP mockery in the space below:

Of course, the trailer also tackles the other big issue with the film, the fact that Jared Leto’s Joker is nowhere to be seen after he broke Harley Quinn out of jail at the end of Suicide Squad. Though Joker doesn’t show up in the film, the movie does have a solid villain in Black Mask, a fact the trailer acknowledges by shouting out Ewan McGregor’s performance (while making light of how the movie clearly tiptoed around the issue of Black Mask’s sexuality in order to avoid being censored in China). The trailer also makes some other more silly observations, like pointing out how many times characters refer to Cassandra Cain as “kid,” and also taking potshots at the movie’s somewhat undeveloped supporting characters.

The Honest Trailers treatment is of course always rather brutal, and in the case of Birds of Prey, there are some legitimate points brought up about some of the movie’s problems. However, the trailer does give credit to the film for its entertaining fight scenes and good cast, which indeed are the strongest elements of the movie and worthy of praise (even if the film fumbled the ball in certain ways).
