The latest DC movie to go into development is Birds of Prey, a Harley Quinn spinoff that teams the Joker's Pumpkin Pie with a plethora of other female heroes and villains. Who could play this super squad in the DCEU? We have some casting ideas.
One of the few elements of the first wave of DCEU movies which earned unanimous praise was Margot Robbie’s transformative performance as Harley Quinn, psychotic villainess and main squeeze to The Joker, as seen in 2016's Suicide Squad. Naturally, she's been linked to many more films - not just Suicide Squad 2, but also Gotham City Sirens, Mad Love, and her own spinoff - although now a new picture has emerged.
All but confirmed as the director of the Birds of Prey film in Cathy Yan, which is set to star Robbie’s Quinn alongside a slew of DC’s most famous female faces. Based on several reports, this has taken precedence over even Suicide Squad 2, which means the discussion will soon turn to casting. Here's who we think should fight alongside – and against – Robbie’s Harley.
Harley Leads Birds of Prey
Obviously, Margot Robbie is going to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the Birds of Prey movie. Apparently, WB is developing two scripts for the project, both of which prominently feature Harley and Batgirl. The other characters are different depending on the script, meaning that the film's two key pillars, character-wise, are Barbara Gordon and the erstwhile Dr. Quinzel.
Margot Robbie as Harley is a proven asset. It's undeniable that she played a significant part in bringing Suicide Squad to an unexpectedly high $746 million worldwide, not too far off from Batman v Superman's $873 million total – and that's without a release in China, which outright refused to allow the movie into the country. Since Suicide Squad's release in 2016, Robbie's star has only continued to rise, complete with an Oscar-nominated turn in the awards season darling, I, Tonya.
Which Characters Will Join Harley Quinn In Birds of Prey?
The superhero group, Birds of Prey, was first formed in a mid-1990s one-shot featuring Black Canary and Barbara Gordon. Since then, the roster of heroines on the squad has varied, but the most notable members have always been Black Canary, Oracle (or Batgirl, depending on the state of Barbara's spine), and Huntress. Over the years, the roster has included a great many female heroes, including Big Barda, Vixen, Hawkgirl, and Lady Blackhawk, who served as the team's pilot.
This all leads to the question: who else will be in the film? It's hard to imagine any Birds of Prey team without its core trio of Black Canary, Huntress, and Barbara Gordon. Beyond that, it's been speculated that elements from the in-flux Gotham City Sirens film may be incorporated, meaning characters like Poison Ivy and Catwoman could play a role in Cathy Yan's movie.
While these core characters are seemingly obvious shoo-ins to lead Birds of Prey, this is by no means confirmation that they will factor into the story of the still-in-development movie. That being said, when it comes to our Bird of Prey casting, they're who we're going to run with.
