Birds of Prey adds Rosie Perez to its roster as another DC female hero. Margot Robbie is set to lead the movie as her first appearance as Harley Quinn since stealing the show in Suicide Squad. Not only is she starring in Birds of Prey but she's also producing the female-led ensemble film, and she's making sure there's plenty female talent around her. Indie director Cathy Yan will helm the production, which just named Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as the first two co-stars. Winstead is Huntress, while Bell is set to play Black Canary.
With actresses set in the roles for Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary, the attention of Birds of Prey has moved on to the supporting roles. It was previously reported that Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez were contenders for the role of Renee Montoya, an openly gay Gotham detective who helps the female team, but a different actress has ultimately landed the job.
The Wrap reports Academy Award nominee Rosie Perez is joining Birds of Prey as Renee Montoya. She made her acting debut in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and was then seen in White Men Can't Jump a few years later. It was that same year when Perez received her Oscar nomination for her role in Fearless in 1993. She's gone on to have a great career in film and TV, where she most recently starred in NBC show Rise.
The addition of Perez means Birds of Prey has four of its main roles cast, but how big of a role she'll have is not yet clear. The movie is set to take place in a Gotham where Batman is no longer protecting the city, so her job as a Gotham detective should only be that much busier and difficult. Joining forces with the Birds of Prey may be the best way for Montoya to help clean up the streets. It is not yet clear if she will become Question in the movie or if that will be saved for a potential future film.
This leaves Birds of Prey with two known roles left to cast and then the rest of the smaller ones. Cassandra Cain is vital to Birds of Prey's plot and should make it a highly coveted part for a young Asian actress. They also need to determine who will play the film's villain, reportedly Black Mask. A recent report stated Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley are two of the names being discussed by Warner Bros. The studio is said to want to have their cast assembled soon, so Perez's addition should mean that even more Birds of Prey casting announcements are on the way.
