Birds Of Prey: What Jurnee Smollett-Bell Could Look Like As Black Canary

Fan art imagines what Jurnee Smollett-Bell could look like as Black Canary in Birds of Prey. One of Warner Bros. and DC's recent focuses has been on getting the next Harley Quinn project off the ground. Margot Robbie's breakout performance in Suicide Squad resulted in four different projects being put in development, but it is Birds of Prey that became the priority. Cathy Yan is set to direct the movie that will team Harley up with notable DC heroines Black Canary, Huntress, and more.

Since Robbie is reprising her leading role, the early casting decisions became who would be starring around her. It was recently announced that Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead joined as Black Canary and Huntress respectively. Other roles still need to be announced, but fans are already eager to see the big screen portrayals of these characters. Birds of Prey isn't hitting theaters until 2020, so an official image may still be a ways off.

Thankfully, fan artist datrinti took a shot at bringing Smollett-Bell's Black Canary to life. The design closely resembles that of the comics with the black and yellow leather jacket. The artist even gave Smollett-Bell some blonde highlights to increase the similarities.

Without knowing what Birds of Prey's version of Black Canary will be, it is easy to see this costume working in the DCEU because some of the design choices are similar to Harley's look. Both sport jackets of their own, while the fishnet tights are also included in both designs. This is just a fan's interpretation of how the costume could be designed, and since Black Canary has had several different looks in the comics, there's no guarantee that a costume similar to this will be used.

Unfortunately for fans eager to see an official look at Smollett-Bell in her Black Canary costume, such a reveal is still probably a few months away. Filming on Birds of Prey is scheduled to begin early 2019, so DC could release an official look at the entire cast in their costumes when production starts. If they don't, then the first look could very well come through set photos of Birds of Prey's production. Those images are rarely completely accurate representations of the final looks, so hopefully the studio will put out an official image or at least let Smollett-Bell and her co-stars share their costumes on social media. Whether the final look resembles this fan art or not, Smollett-Bell should look great as Black Canary and, more importantly, deliver a strong performance.
