Batgirl and Harley Quinn are the only constants in Birds of Prey's dueling scripts. Warner Bros. has rediscovered interest in a female-led project. After finding great success with Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, one of the reported priorities for the studio was Batgirl. Joss Whedon wound up leaving that project, giving a very uncertain future. But they also developed several projects for Margot Robbie to star as Harley Quinn. One of those was Birds of Prey, and it's now a major priority after Christina Hodson delivered a great script.

It was just announced that Cathy Yen will direct the Birds of Prey movie. With filming slated to begin at the end of this year, there's still time to polish the script. Considering Hodson was just hired to rewrite Batgirl too, her Birds of Prey script was said to involve Barbara Gordon. Apparently, Barbara and Harley are the only sure things when it comes to the film's cast.

Variety reporter Justin Kroll shared some new details on Birds of Prey's status. According to Kroll, there are two versions of the script currently. It is unclear if both were written by Hodson, or if another writer gave a take, too. Either way, both scripts call for a female ensemble, but only Batgirl and Harley Quinn are constants. He also shared that with Birds of Prey taking Suicide Squad 2's place in the production schedule, that sequel could film immediately after.

Couple of BIRDS OF PREY tidbits I've learned since the Cathy has come on as director. There are two versions of script, only constant is Harley and Barbara Gordon in both. remaining characters different in both scripts.— Justin Kroll (@krolljvar) April 19, 2018

It's not yet know how many other female DC heroes and/or villains will be part of Birds of Prey, but the multiple drafts could drastically change which others are included. One version could include Catwoman and Black Canary, while the other could have Poison Ivy and Huntress. It could be dependent on Yen's personal preference to decide which version of the script to use, and what other DC characters will be introduced as a result.

Suicide Squad 2 filming immediately after Birds of Prey meanwhile further confirms that Harley is very much part of the plan for that film. Not only that, but if Birds of Prey has Batgirl and a team of heroes fighting Harley and some other villains, it could serve as a lead-in to Suicide Squad 2. Assuming Batgirl would be victorious, she could catch Harley's team and have them sent back to Belle Reve. It'd also give the sequel a chance to add more female heroes to the Task Force X lineup.

There's plenty of details that still need to be finalized for both Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad 2. But, it looks like WB is finally going to get Robbie back in character soon, and will release multiple films with her leading in a short period of time. Just when that will be remains to be seen, but both could hit theaters in 2020 based on these production schedules. Whether or not that does happen is still up for debate as neither Suicide Squad 2 nor Birds of Prey have release dates.
